Introduction

Brief overview of chickenpox

Chickenpox is a viral disease mostly known as varicella, derived from the organism that causes the disease, the Varicella-zoster virus. The chickenpox virus is in a viral family that also houses the herpes virus and it is very contagious. That is it spreads from person to person through having contact with fluids or droplets from the cough and sneezing or blisters formed on the skin of an infected person. The chicken pox viral infection is common in children between ages 2-10 or persons who have not been vaccinated against the virus. Although chickenpox may present with symptoms such as fever, headache, body weakness, and blisters on the skin, it can be prevented and treated to avoid further complications.1,2 

Traditional methods for treating chickenpox 

In treating chickenpox in affected individuals several factors are considered and they include: alleviating itching symptoms, pain management, reduction of scars from blisters and lastly hydration and nutrition enhancement.1,3,4

Itchy symptom alleviation

The physical appearance of someone with chickenpox includes rashes and blisters. These rashes can be discomforting and itchy, so there are several methods available for reducing the painful experiences obtained from having chickenpox. This includes:

  • Applying cool and wet towels on areas that are itchy will help reduce the symptoms temporarily and may help prevent you from scratching the areas as it is less itchy
  • Calamine lotion is commonly used to relieve symptoms of chickenpox, this is because it helps in soothing itchy skin and reduces the discomfort from the blisters and rashes. It is important to add that care should be taken while applying calamine lotion around the body to avoid getting in contact with the eyes or other sensitive parts
  • Using antihistamines to manage the itching but it is advised that before using any medications one should seek the advice of their medical doctor

Pain management

One of the major symptoms of chickenpox is an increase in temperature of about 39 Celsius (fever) and pains from the bumps, it is recommended to take an over-the-counter analgesic like paracetamol (acetaminophen) for fever reduction. 

Reduction of scars

Scars may appear on the body of someone with chickenpox and this is due to the scratching of the blisters due to its itchiness. Aside from scratching may result in scars, it also increases the chances of spreading the infection from person to person. To reduce scar one may have to avoid scratching the pox and this can be possible by always trimming the fingernails or for babies and children wear gloves over their hands, using cool and damp towels to place on itchy areas.

Hydration and nutrition

Staying hydrated is encouraged while treating chickenpox, hence one may need to take water and maintain a balanced diet to supply the necessary nutrients lost and to boost the immune system. 

Herbal remedies

There is a belief system that herbal remedies for chickenpox but scientifically, the effectiveness of using the herbs through researching them is sparse. From the available sources on the remedies, it is shown that they can help in managing the symptoms of chickenpox. Herbs like neem and turmeric are used because of their health benefits on the skin and in improving the immune system. Additionally, it is noted that using herbs like ginger, liquorice root, and echinacea may also help improve the immune system. These are judged based on their health benefits which can be utilised while managing chickenpox infection.5 

Homeopathic treatment 

Homoeopathic treatment can also be employed in the management of chickenpox infection. The principle of this kind of treatment is based on like-cures-likes, thus employing it in the treatment of chickenpox involves utilising substances that may cause some of the symptoms seen in persons suffering from chickenpox to treat the actual symptoms of chickenpox. According to the School of Homeopathy, there are about seven remedies that can be used in the treatment of chickenpox. They are as follows:6 

  • Sulfur: it helps to reduce itching and to aid in the healing process of the skin. Sulphur is used when the rashes are red and have a burning sensation which may be itchy. It is used also when the bumps are continuous and prolonged
  • Antimonium tartaricum:  Aside from this substance helps in reducing itchiness and contributes to the healing during chickenpox infection, it is recommended to be used in chickenpox bumps that are filled with thick yellowish fluids and slowly forming
  • Belladonna: belladonna (bell) aids in the management of fever especially when it is sudden, headaches and other chickenpox-associated symptoms. It is used when the appearance of chickenpox rashes has a bright red colour
  • Rhus toxicodendron: this substance when used as a remedy in chickenpox treatment helps the body to respond better to the natural healing process. Additionally, it helps to relieve symptoms such as restlessness and itchiness. Individuals who benefit from its use are those whose chickenpox is severely itching and gets worse if scratched
  • Pulsatilla: the pulsatilla (puls) helps in reducing the itching from chickenpox which may appear as a small rash and may also aid in comforting the individuals as they tend to be tearful and seek attention
  • Apis mellifica: This remedy is highly recommended for use in persons whose chickenpox is highly itching and has a burning or tingling feeling. The characteristics of the chickenpox rash is a high inflammation that is red and swollen
  • Mezereum: the mezereum called mez is also used when the chickenpox rash is itching and stinging, hence aiding to alleviate symptoms and even help in healing. The uniqueness of this remedy is that it is efficient when the bumps appear in areas like the face, and scalps

Precautionary measures

The need to always take precautions while treating chickenpox can not be overly emphasised, as chickenpox remains a viral infection hence there is a need to consult a health expert such as the medical doctor to guide you through the treatment process. However, using traditional remedies such as herbal remedies and homoeopathic remedies in the treatment of chickenpox may be comforting as they alleviate symptoms and assist in the healing process. Getting vaccinated against the virus, chickenpox remains the best option in preventing chickenpox and its potential complications.7

Summary 

Chickenpox which is frequently seen as a childhood illness can be treated medically but there are alternative methods that are explored in its treatment. This traditional method targets the symptoms thereby alleviating the symptoms and promoting comfort during recovery. Providing symptomatic relief may sound good, but seeking the guidance of healthcare professionals is encouraged especially when the symptoms are severe and complicated. Getting vaccinated against chickenpox is highly recommended as it is an effective method for preventing the occurrence of chickenpox and other complications that may arise from it.
