Introduction

Anchovies are a type of small, oily fish found in many coastal regions worldwide.1 Although small in size, anchovies are packed with vital nutrients, including macronutrients and micronutrients like protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats and amino acids.2 Incorporating anchovies into a child's diet can be a useful way to increase their nutrient intake, for proper growth and development. A healthy diet is crucial for children, as it lays the foundation for their physical, cognitive and emotional well-being. In this article, we’ll be taking a closer look at the key components that make anchovies a beneficial food choice for children’s health. 

Nutritional profile of anchovies

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids

Anchovies are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fats are essential for children's cognitive development, brain growth, and eye health. Omega-3s have also been shown to support a healthy immune system and reduce inflammation, which can help prevent and manage chronic conditions like asthma and allergies.3

High protein content

Anchovies are packed with high-quality, easily digestible protein, making them an ideal food for children actively growing and building muscle mass.2 All the essential amino acids are present in anchovies' protein, which ensures children have the building blocks necessary for hormone production, tissue repair, and other critical biological processes.

Essential vitamins and minerals 

In addition to their omega-3 and protein content, anchovies are also a rich source of several essential vitamins and minerals that are crucial for children's health. These include:

Vitamin D which supports strong bones and teeth, as well as immune function.

Calcium is vital for the development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.5

Iron helps prevent anaemia and supports the transport of oxygen throughout the body 

Low in mercury and contaminants

Anchovies have significantly low levels of mercury and other environmental toxins compared to certain larger, predatory fish. They are therefore a safe and suitable option for children, who are vulnerable to the negative consequences of heavy metal exposure.6 

Impact on brain development and cognitive function

Omega-3 fatty acids and brain health

The omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in anchovies, specifically EPA and DHA are considered essential for proper brain development and function. These healthy fats are vital structural components of brain cells, helping to maintain the integrity and fluidity of neural membranes.7 They also support the transmission of electrical signals between neurons, facilitating efficient communication within the brain.7

Cognitive benefits for children 

The omega-3s in anchovies have been linked to several cognitive benefits for children. Studies have shown that adequate omega-3 intake is associated with improved memory, attention and learning abilities in young people. These fatty acids help to enhance neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to adapt and form new connections, which is crucial for supporting children's rapidly developing cognitive skills.8

Role in preventing neurodevelopmental disorders 

Emerging research also suggests that the omega-3s in anchovies may play a protective role against certain neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children with ADHD often exhibit deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids and supplementation with DHA and EPA has been found to help improve symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.9 By incorporating anchovies into a child's diet, parents can help ensure their child's brain is receiving the nourishment it needs to thrive. Overall, the high omega-3 content of anchovies makes them a valuable addition to any child's diet, as these essential fatty acids are critical for supporting optimal brain development, cognitive function, and mental health.9

Supporting growth and development

Protein for muscle growth and repair

Anchovies are an excellent source of high-quality and easily digestible protein. This essential macronutrient provides children with the building blocks needed to support the growth and repair of muscles, tissues and organs.10 The protein in anchovies contains all the necessary amino acids, ensuring that children's bodies have the resources required to thrive.

Calcium for bone health

Calcium is a critical mineral for the development and maintenance of strong, healthy bones and teeth.11 As children grow, their skeletal system undergoes rapid changes and requires adequate calcium intake to support proper mineralisation. Anchovies are a rich natural source of calcium, making them a valuable addition to a child's diet to support optimal bone health and prevent conditions like osteoporosis later in life.5 Recent studies have shown that anchovies are an effective antibacterial agent for children’s oral health. Anchovies contain high levels of fluoride and calcium, which are vital in the growth of teeth, especially for children who need nutritional intake. Fluoride has inhibitory activity against plaque bacterial enzymes which helps reduce tooth decay, whereas Calcium triggers the mobilisation and proliferation of osteocytes as bone-forming cells facilitating growth.5

Iron for red blood cell production and energy

Iron is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in producing haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein found in red blood cells.12 Consuming enough iron is crucial to avoiding anaemia and maintaining that children's bodies have the energy to support physical activity, development and growth. Parents can easily fulfil their child's iron needs by consuming anchovies, which is a great source of bioavailable iron.

Incorporating anchovies into children's diet

Due to the high sodium in anchovies, convincing children to eat it may come with difficulties, therefore introducing anchovies into familiar and well-liked dishes might be a more successful strategy for encouraging children to eat it for their nutritional benefits. Some ideas include anchovy pasta, and anchovy Pizza, a delicious and convenient snack.1 Here are a few snack ideas:

  • Anchovy spread on whole grain crackers: Mash anchovies with a bit of cream cheese or greek yoghurt, then spread on whole grain crackers for a savoury and satisfying snack
  • Anchovy eggs: Hard-boil eggs, then mix the yolks with anchovies, mayonnaise, and a touch of mustard for a protein-rich treat
  • Anchovy-stuffed olives: Stuff pitted green or black olives with minced anchovies and flecks of lemon for a salty, flavourful snack13

Misconceptions

Mercury and contaminant levels

Some parents are concerned about the mercury content and potential contaminants in anchovies. While it's true that larger predatory fish can have higher mercury levels, anchovies are small, short-lived fish that are generally low in mercury.14 According to studies, anchovies' mercury content is significantly lower than the recommended limit for consumption by children. Additionally, anchovies are usually sourced sustainably and contain a small amount of other environmental pollutants.14 The relatively minor risks from mercury or other pollutants are outweighed by the health advantages of the omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and vitamins found in anchovies. Although moderation is still recommended, anchovies can be a healthy and harmless addition to a child's diet.

Allergy risks and alternatives

While fish allergies are relatively common in children, anchovies are less likely to trigger an allergic reaction than larger, oilier fish.15 However, it's still important to watch for signs of an allergy when first introducing anchovies. If your child has a known fish or seafood allergy, look for alternative ways to get the nutritional benefits that anchovies offer.

Anchovies provide children with the fundamental building blocks needed to support optimal growth, cognitive function, and general well-being because of their protein, micronutrient, and omega-3 fatty acids. Anchovies are a great option to add the essential nutrients to a child's diet for healthy physical, mental, and emotional development because of their adaptability and accessibility. Research has shown that anchovies are a superfood for children’s health. By using the appropriate strategy, parents can use the nutrients of these little but formidable fish to open up a world of benefits for their children.
