The Black sapote fruit (Diospyros digyna) is a member of the Ebenaceae family and is closely related to the persimmon. It is a delicious fruit that grows along the coasts of Mexico and Central America. It is typically harvested when green and firm, although it is only edible when it turns soft and dark brown. It’s commonly known as ‘Chocolate Pudding Fruit” and can be eaten fresh (without the skin), added to smoothies, or used in desserts to take advantage of its sweet, custard-like flavour.

Black Sapote is a powerhouse of vitamins and nutrients essential for healthy eye function and protection from environmental damage. Regular consumption of black sapote can help protect against various eye conditions and support overall visual health.

One of the major factors in the development of various eye conditions is oxidative stress which can lead to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Antioxidants play an important role in protecting the eyes from oxidative damage.

Vitamin A

Black sapote is rich in vitamin A, which is required to keep the eye surface healthy and plays a critical role in maintaining normal vision.1

Vitamin A is important in the formation of visual pigments in the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye responsible for converting light into neural signals, which the brain interprets as vision. It is critical in maintaining the health of the cornea and conjunctival membranes.

One of the forms of vitamin A is retinol. Retinol is a component of rhodopsin, a protein in the eyes that aids vision in low-light conditions. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness and, rarely, total blindness. Therefore, eating black sapote regularly can prevent vitamin A deficiency and vitamin A-related vision problems.

Carotenoids

Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A with antioxidant properties. Its presence in black sapote protects the eye against oxidative stress and helps prevent vision-related issues.4 Beta-carotene is found in black sapote.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects the eyes against damage from oxidative stress and free radicals.2 Our eyes have a delicate network of blood vessels that supply essential nutrients and oxygen. Vitamin C in Black Sapote supports the health of these blood vessels by promoting collagen production. It helps maintain the health of blood vessels in the eyes and lower the risk of cataracts. It also helps regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamin E, thereby boosting their effectiveness.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another important antioxidant that protects eye cells from damage.3 It can also reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration by neutralising the harmful free radicals. 

The role of black sapote in lowering the risk of cataract formation

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the two major carotenoids found in the central part of the retina (the macula). These carotenoids absorb excess light energy from the sun and protect the eye from harmful blue light. Studies show that a higher consumption of these carotenoids is associated with a lower risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.5 Black sapote helps sustain the density of macular pigment and improves visual performance in conditions of low contrast or glare.

Cataracts are a condition characterised by clouding of the eye lens. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to poor vision and blindness. The beta-carotene in Black Sapote helps protect the lens from oxidative damage. These antioxidants help the eye filter harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and protect the cells in the eyes.

Potassium 

Potassium helps the cells in the eyes function properly and plays an important role in overall cellular function. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure, another crucial factor in maintaining healthy eyes.

Fiber and eye health

Black sapote is a good source of dietary fiber which helps maintain cardiovascular health and ensure adequate blood supply to the eyes. Poor blood circulation, resulting in an insufficient blood supply to the eyes, can lead to conditions like diabetic retinopathy.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Black Sapote contains several anti-inflammatory compounds that can help prevent inflammation in the eyes such as uveitis, the inflammation of the middle layer of the eye. Chronic inflammation causes various eye conditions. Black sapote is a useful addition to the diet for individuals prone to inflammatory eye conditions.

The potential benefits of black sapote to eye health

Black sapote can help prevent night blindness and improve vision in low-light conditions due to its high vitamin A content.

Age-elated macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. Antioxidants found in Black Sapote such as vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration. The antioxidants such as vitamins C and E can also help prevent and slow down the progression of cataracts, reducing the risk of cataracts.

Although there is limited research on Black Sapote, the nutrients present in black sapote have been extensively studied for their impact on eye health.

Multiple studies have demonstrated the importance of lutein and zeaxanthin4 in improving visual performance and protecting the macula. Regular consumption of foods rich in these carotenoids, such as black sapote, can help maintain healthy vision.
