Proper recovery allows our muscles to heal and grow stronger. Nutrition and hydration play a key role in aiding the recovery process. This article will explore coconut’s nutritional and hydration benefits and how it can assist you in your post-workout muscle recovery.1,2

Nutritional benefits of coconut

Coconut offers various components that contribute to your nutritional benefits, including coconut water, coconut meat, and coconut oil. In detail, let’s talk about the nutritional benefits of coconut water and coconut meat.

Coconut water

Coconut water is the clear liquid inside the green coconuts. It is rich in electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals. About 95% of coconut water is just water. All these components help prevent or treat dehydration overall.3

Coconut water is a low-calorie hydrating option, containing about 45 calories. Coconut water contains natural electrolytes like potassium, which helps in kidney function and muscle contractions. With a higher proportion of potassium compared to sodium, coconut water effectively counteracts the impact of sodium on blood pressure, contributing to its reduction.4,5

There are several other nutrients in coconut water, like calcium and magnesium. Calcium helps in muscle contraction and strengthening bones and the magnesium present helps move calcium and potassium into the muscles while also helping in other functions like energy production.3

Coconut water helps reduce the risk of developing heart disease. It also contains antioxidants, thus helping neutralise oxidative stress and free radicals.6

Coconut meat

The white fleshy part inside a coconut is called the coconut meat. Coconut meat contains many nutrients, like magnesium, iron, and copper. It also contains a good amount of fiber which helps promote overall gut health.7,8

Coconut meat also contains saturated fats, which are mostly made up of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs can be converted to energy more easily than any other fat source.7,9,10

Coconut meat also contains powerful antioxidants, which help in tackling the cause of oxidative stress and lower the risk of developing a variety of conditions like diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases, and even eye diseases associated with ageing (macular degeneration and cataracts).9,11

Hydration and electrolyte replenishment

When you exercise, there is a rise in body temperature and to regulate and get it back to an optimal temperature, your body produces sweat. As sweat evaporates from the skin, it removes the heat from the body.12

The sweat mainly contains water, but it also contains metabolites, unmetabolised pharmaceutical drugs, and minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.13

Dehydration is when your body's water content is too low, which could lead to other problems like muscle cramps, weakness, slow reaction time, and more.12

How dehydration affects muscle recovery

Dehydration leads to a decrease in blood flow to exercising muscles, which leads to a decrease in exercise performance, this is because blood helps in delivering nutrients and oxygen to the muscles, removing waste products and regulating the body temperature. Dehydration not only affects workouts but also affects muscle recovery.14,15

Muscle rebuilding happens by protein synthesis, however, if you are dehydrated, it slows your recovery process and halts the protein synthesis. Dehydration will also affect the digestion processes (eg, it affects saliva, which plays a major role in digestion and especially carbohydrate digestion) and increases fatigue, which hinders the recovery process.

A 2012 study also found that individuals who drank water during and after workouts showed significantly faster heart rate recovery, meaning t their bodies recovered faster from the stresses of exercise compared to those individuals who did not drink anything at all during the 90-minute workout.15

Electrolytes and their functions

Electrolytes are minerals that have an electric charge when they are dissolved in water (or bodily fluids, including blood). Sodium, potassium, phosphate, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and bicarbonate are our body’s main electrolytes.16,17

Electrolytes play a major role in our basic life function which includes maintaining electrical neutrality in cells, generating and conducting action potentials in nerves and muscles, contraction of muscles, secretion of hormones, balancing the body's acid/base (pH) levels, balancing the amount of fluid in our body, moving nutrients into and removing waste from the cells, skeletal mineralisation and a lot more.16,17

Coconut water for rehydration and electrolyte replenishment

Coconut water's natural electrolyte content can aid in rehydration and electrolyte replenishment, helping you recover faster and feel more energised after a strenuous workout. As we have already read before, coconut water can be used to prevent and treat dehydration.18

Coconut water contains flavonoids, which inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandin, which plays a key role in generating inflammatory responses. Coconut water also has antioxidant potential due to the presence of kinetin and other micronutrients; this antioxidant potential also helps decrease inflammation. Coconut water also has antihistaminic effects and contains abscisic acid, which contributes to anti-inflammatory effects.19

Coconut meat also contains many antioxidant phenolic compounds. The main phenolic compounds identified are gallic acid, caffeic acid, salicylic acid, and p-coumaric acid. All of these help in neutralising high amounts of oxidative stress.18,19

Providing essential nutrients

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are crucial for muscle repair and growth. Coconut contains several essential amino acids that support muscle recovery, including arginine, leucine, and lysine. In addition to amino acids, coconut contains essential vitamins and minerals contributing to overall recovery and muscle health. Consuming a lot of coconut meat means that a person will consume a lot of fats, including polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fats. Due to the high-calorie count of coconut meat, it may lead to unwanted weight gain. It's important to create a balance; moderation and portion control are key when including coconut in your post-workout nutrition.

Another potential but quite rare health risk due to excessive consumption of coconut water is hyperkalemia (elevated potassium level in blood). Also, the high amount of potassium compared to sodium in coconut water can lower blood pressure, which can be bad for individuals who are on medication for low blood pressure.

Also, coconut should be considered a complimentary, not a sole post-work-out aid. A well-rounded approach to recovery that includes rest, hydration, and a balanced diet is crucial for achieving optimal results.
