Nicotine is what we call a stimulant drug, having a direct and powerful impact on the chemistry of our brains. 1 Due to its potency, many people experience difficulties when attempting to quit nicotine use, usually in the form of smoking, vaping, or other nicotine products. While it is common knowledge that nicotine use can have negative implications for our health, few of us are aware of how deeply it can impact our cognitive abilities. Some of the common challenges associated with nicotine withdrawal are brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and memory issues. Both understanding and addressing these issues are integral to making it through the first stages of withdrawal and quitting the detrimental habit for good.

Exercise regularly

Regular physical exercise can increase oxygenated blood flow to the brain, naturally boosting dopamine during a time of low dopamine.

Healthy diet and hydration

Balanced meals can help your body gain all essential vitamins and nutrients, increasing the feeling of health and wellbeing, and reducing symptoms of withdrawal.

Quality sleep

Around 8 hours of sleep each night will help to reset the brain’s cognitive capabilities over time.

Brain engagement

Consider using books, games, or puzzles to keep the brain active, slowly building up the attention span that diminished during nicotine use.

While nicotine withdrawal can seem tough and at times impossible, it is important to persevere and understand that the cognitive issues seen in withdrawal are temporary and will improve with time.
