Introduction

We live in a world where technology and health are converging, the electromagnetic therapy serves as a fascinating example of this confluence. This approach to pain management, which uses electromagnetic fields to interact with the body at a cellular level, has existed for hundreds of years. It helps to alleviate different types of pain including headaches, arthritis, wound healing and even depression. And the best part of this treatment is that it is totally risk-free, with zero to minimal side effects.

What is electromagnetic therapy?

Electromagnetic therapy is a non-invasive form of functional medicine that can be used to treat symptoms of various illnesses and restore well-being. It is based on the belief that our bodies contain magnetic and electric fields and their disruption leads to certain diseases. In such cases, electromagnetic therapy helps in the rehabilitation of physical as well as mental health by maintaining balance in the electromagnetic fields of our body.

How does it work?

When we say our bodies naturally have magnetic and electrical fields, it also implies that our cells possess magnetic energy. It is also a fact that impulses travelling through our nerves are actually electrical signals which involve certain ions for movement, therefore supporting the presence of electromagnetic fields in our bodies.

So when such energies get disrupted, we have to introduce similar kinds of energy/signals i.e. electromagnetic stimulation to reinstate a balanced state. During some tests, Scientists have observed changes in those ions. Since these are the same ions responsible for the normal functioning of the body, it was deduced that the electromagnetic waves modified them and subsequently, established well-being and alleviation of symptoms.

Benefits of electromagnetic therapy

Magnetic field therapy may assist in relieving symptoms related to:

  • Inflammatory disease (eg: arthritis, rheumatism, osteoarthritis)
  • Back & neck pain, muscle spasms
  • Psychological disorders (eg: depression, ADHD, stress)
  • Migraines, headaches
  • Oral and dental problems
  • Infections, injuries, wound healing
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Sleep disorders

Electromagnetic devices

The choice of electromagnetic devices depends upon the pathology they are intended to treat. These are divided into two categories:

The one creating high frequency, yet low intensity field is recommended for treatment of pain and inflammation originating from soft tissues as well as promote healing. The other one allows treatment of skeletal system related diseases and inflammation. Low frequency and high intensity devices are most commonly used and considered more effective against variety of conditions as compared to its counterpart.

How does it actually help in pain management?

Generally, all cells possess an electrical potential called resting membrane potential (RMP). It is the difference between the intra and extracellular electric charge. A lower potential difference means low cell vitality. An injury or disease may cause the cells to lose their electric charge.

Various studies suggest that electromagnetic stimulation of the cell membrane improves the levels of oxygen and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules, therefore re-energising the group of cells.

Why does that lead to pain relief?

The vitality of the cell can be restored by replenishing the lost electric charge through electromagnetic therapy. As soon as this is achieved, the cells promote a self-healing process. It also boosts the development of immune system cells and limits inflammation and infection. This in turn leads to pain relief and ultimately, a general state of well-being.

More studies are required to be conducted to investigate and verify the claims made against the effectiveness of the therapy. Nevertheless, it has proven to yield significant results.

Potential risks and precautions

The risks of electromagnetic therapy are very low. There are no known major side effects associated with the therapy. Some people may experience mild nausea or dizziness, but it is quite insignificant and usually goes away on its own.

Who should not undergo electromagnetic therapy?

Despite its risk-free nature, It is always better to be safe than sorry. Therefore, it is contradicted

  • Pacemaker wearers
  • Pregnant women
  • Malignant tumors
  • Acute conditions

FAQs

Is electromagnetic therapy proven to be effective?

Many clinical trials have been done to prove its effectiveness and shown promising benefits. The patients have reported a significant improvement in their symptoms and overall health. However, these studies are low in numbers and provide little evidence regarding the mechanisms. Therefore, it is difficult to draw concrete conclusions yet.

Is electromagnetic therapy safe to use?

Yes! It is one of the procedures with about zero risks. There are no significant side effects though the individuals may experience mild nausea or dizziness which goes away on its own.

How long does it take to work?

It typically takes around 4-6 weeks for the patient to notice a significant improvement in their symptoms. The number of sessions depends upon the individuals and the extent of their condition. An average therapy session lasts for about 30 minutes, and it can be done multiple times a day or for relatively longer durations.

Summary

In conclusion, it is suggested that electromagnetic therapy relieves pain and improves well-being in individuals with various conditions. It uses magnets incorporated in electrical devices to stimulate the natural electromagnetic fields of our body. It is essentially a risk-free yet effective treatment method for pain management. Further research is required to understand its mechanisms and reliability.
