Nutritional composition of pomegranate: what is actually happening inside
So how did the pomegranate gain such prestigious status, and what relevance does it hold for our cardiovascular health?
In short, the answer lies in its abundance of antioxidantsPomegranates are rich with a blend of antioxidants like tannins and anthocyanins which are considered to be some of the potent types.1 Numerous studies have confirmed the considerable antioxidant and radical scavenging effects of pomegranate juice, which are mainly due to the these compounds present in the fruit, along with their action in fighting atherosclerosis and maintaining healthy lipids, the wider spectrum of action of pomegranates in fighting free radicals is attributed in the combination of those unique antioxidants that are found within compounds found in plants called polyphenols.1,8

Suprisingly, the juice is the part where we can enjoy those juicy antioxidants which only account for less than 1% of the juice content! Pomegranates show their work on promoting heart health by playing on several parameters linked directly to the wellbeing of the cardiovascular system. From regulating blood pressure to mitigating the formation of atherosclerosis and balancing blood lipid levels, pomegranate can contribute by keeping those parameters in check, it can maintain a healthy vascular system and a well pumping heart, we will see how exactly does this fruit do that.
Lowering blood pressure
Pomegranates promotes cardiovascular health and one of their key benefit is the ability to lower blood pressure. A study revealed that the consumption of 50 ml of pomegranate juice led to 5% reduction in their systolic blood pressure (the upper value of blood pressure) in patients with high blood pressure.
This reduction is believed to be attributed to a significant 36% decrease in the activity of an enzyme called Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE).ACE is targeted by certain groups of medications used to treat hypertension. Several other studies on different groups have also shown similar results.1
In fact, the reduction in ACE activity even without lowering blood pressure has positive effects in preventing atherosclerosis and protect against cardiovascular disease.1
Improving lipid profile, how does pomegranate affects our blood levels
Pomegranates are packed with powerful antioxidants that help regulate blood lipids, by enhancing the cellular antioxidant capacity.6 Several studies on both mice and humans have investigated the positive effects of pomegranates on lipid profiles. Although the results varied a comprehsnive analysis combining these studies found positive outcomes.
This pooled analysis showed that pomegranates can indeed reduce blood levels of LDL (the bad cholesterol) and triglycerides and increases the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol). Therefore, drinking pomegranate juice or eating raw fruit can improve your lipid profile and support heart health.6
Anti-atherosclerotic effects
Pomegranates’ effectiveness in combating atherosclerosis is attributed on their superior antioxidant properties, which excel in controlling blood lipids. This means they prevent the oxidation of LDL and HDL which otherwise contributes to the formation of fat plaques inside blood vessels, a condition known as atherosclerosis - a leading cause of heart disease.1
Furthermore, the antioxidants in pomegranates aid in breaking down the harmful oxidised lipids present within already-formed atherosclerosis plaques, further mitigating their detrimental effects.1
Endothelial function enhancement, how pomegranates maintain the walls
Endothelial health, the inner layer of blood vessels, is indeed a critical part of cardiovascular well-being, as it forms the walls of the entire circulatory system. Pomegranates have been shown to support the maintenance of healthy vessel walls, as mentioned earlier in their ability to manage high blood pressure and reduce the activity of the ACE enzyme. This protective effect to the endothelium is crucial because high blood pressure can stress the blood vessels, leading to damage.7
Another observation of how pomegranates contribute to blood vessel health is their ability to promote vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels, which occurs about four hours after consuming pomegranate juice. This dilaition is facilitated by the release of nitroglycerin.7
