Introduction

  • Nasal congestion: Also known as a stuffy nose, is the blockage or swelling of your nasal passages
  • The itching may appear due to infections or environmental factors
  • Nasal congestion may be overlooked and it may seem insignificant as compared to other health issues however, frequent congestion can impact your health and life
  • Prevention and treatment of nasal congestion is important for the maintenance of good health.
  • Let us understand the causes so we can address the issue more accurately

Identify and avoid triggers

To address any issue, we need to understand its root cause. The best way to treat nasal congestion is by knowing what causes it and how you can avoid these triggers. The two most common triggers are:

  • Allergens
  • Irritants

Reducing the exposure to these triggers can help in decreasing the chances of developing nasal congestion.

Allergens

Following substances are the most common allergens of nasal congestion:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Mould

Here are a few tips to reduce exposure:

Pollen

Pollen is a powdery, granular substance in the flowers of trees, grasses and weeds that leads to fertilisation of plants. Pollen can be spread by insects or dispersed in the wind1

  • During pollen season, keep windows closed (especially in the morning and late afternoon because this is when pollen levels usually peak)
  • Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to lower levels of indoor pollen. HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mould, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm)2

Dust mites

Dust mite allergy is an allergic condition that occurs as a reaction to the dust mite allergens that commonly live in household dust.3

  •  Wash bedding in hot water weekly or use an allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers
  • To ensure that the quantity of dust mites in your home decreases over time, clean it frequently as required

Pet dander

Dried skin flakes shed from animals can cause congestion.

  • Limit pets to rooms other than the bedroom and groom them often to reduce dander
  • Air purifiers can also be beneficial in reducing airborne dander

Mould

Mould spores in damp environments can lead to congestion.

  • Reduce mould growth by fixing leaks, using dehumidifiers, and keeping bathrooms and kitchens well-ventilated

Irritants

Irritants - smoke, strong odours, and pollution - can also contribute to nasal congestion. Here are some strategies for minimizing exposure:

Avoid smoke

  • Stay away from cigarette smoke, bonfires, and wood stoves as these can irritate your nasal passages
  • If you smoke, consider quitting, as smoking not only contributes to congestion but also harms overall respiratory health

Limit exposure to strong odours

  • Perfumes, cleaning products, and certain foods can trigger nasal congestion
  • Use unscented or mild-scented products, and ventilate your home well when using strong-smelling items

Reduce exposure to pollution

  • Air pollution, both indoors and outdoors, can worsen nasal congestion
  • Use air purifiers indoors and try to stay indoors during high outdoor pollution, such as during heavy traffic hours or in areas affected by wildfires

Maintain good indoor air quality

Maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for preventing nasal congestion. Here are some ways to improve the air quality in your home:

Humidification

Dry air can irritate nasal passages, making them more susceptible to congestion.

Using a humidifier adds moisture to the air, which helps keep nasal passages moist and reduces the risk of congestion.

A humidifier is a household appliance or device designed to increase the moisture level in the air within a room or an enclosed space.4

  • Benefits of using a humidifier: Humidifiers can help prevent dryness in the nasal passages, especially during the winter months when indoor air tends to be dry. This can prevent irritation and reduce the risk of congestion
  • Ideal humidity levels for nasal health: Aim to maintain indoor humidity levels between 30 - 50%. Too much humidity can promote mould growth, which can worsen congestion, so it's important to find a balance

Regular Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps reduce allergens and irritants in the home.

  • Dusting and vacuuming: Dust surfaces frequently and vacuum carpets with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter. This can help reduce dust, pet dander, and other allergens
  • Using HEPA filters: HEPA filters are designed to trap small particles like dust, pollen, and dander. Use them in air purifiers and vacuum cleaners to maintain cleaner air

Practice good personal hygiene

Practising good personal hygiene can significantly reduce your risk of developing nasal congestion due to infections.

Hand hygiene

  • Washing hands frequently: Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria that cause infections like the common cold, which can lead to nasal congestion. Use hand sanitiser when soap and water are not available

Nasal irrigation

  • Benefits of saline nasal sprays or rinses: Saline nasal sprays and rinses help flush out mucus, allergens, and irritants from the nasal passages, keeping them clear and reducing congestion

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining healthy nasal passages.

Benefits of hydration for nasal passages

  • Keeps mucus thin: Drinking plenty of water helps keep mucus thin and flowing, which can prevent blockages and congestion

Tips for maintaining hydration

  • Drink plenty of water: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Consider carrying a water bottle with you to encourage regular hydration
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol: These substances can dehydrate your body, so try to limit their intake

Strengthen the immune system

A strong immune system can help prevent infections that cause nasal congestion. Here are some basic and easy ways to boost your immunity:

Healthy diet

  • Importance of a balanced diet: Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential nutrients like vitamins C and D, zinc, and antioxidants that support immune function

Regular exercise

  • Exercise boosts immunity: Regular physical activity helps improve circulation, reduces stress, and boosts immune function, all of which can help prevent nasal congestion

Adequate Sleep

  • Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Quality sleep is vital for the immune system to function effectively and defend against infections

Use preventive medications and remedies

If you're prone to nasal congestion, consider using preventive medications and remedies.

Over-the-counter medications

  • Antihistamines and decongestants: These can help manage symptoms for allergy sufferers
  • Decongestants are a type of medicine that can provide short-term relief for a blocked or stuffy nose (nasal congestion)
  • Decongestants are available as:
    • nasal sprays
    • drops
    • tablets or capsules
    • liquids or syrups
    • flavoured powders to dissolve in hot water5
  • Antihistamines reduce allergic reactions, while decongestants relieve nasal congestion by shrinking swollen nasal tissues
  • Always consult a healthcare professional before using these medications, especially for long-term use

Home remedies

Steam inhalation

Inhaling steam helps moisturize nasal passages and clear mucus. You can do this by taking a hot shower or inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water.

Warm compresses

Applying a warm compress over the nose and forehead can help relieve sinus pressure and open nasal passages.

Essential oils

Certain essential oils like eucalyptus and peppermint have decongestant properties. Add a few drops to a diffuser or bowl of hot water and inhale the steam.

Summary

Nasal congestion makes you feel uncomfortable and it is many a times bothersome. It is important to know the correct preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of at least decrease the severity of nasal congestion.

Some points to remember:

  • Avoid triggers
  • Maintain good air quality
  • Practice personal hygiene
  • Stay hydrated
