Preventing Periodontal Diseases

According to the Mayo Clinic, the way to prevent periodontal disease (periodontitis) is to inculcate good oral hygiene early in your life and stay consistent throughout your lifetime.

Good oral hygiene means making the teeth and its environment less habitable to bacteria by brushing twice daily for at least two minutes i.e morning, after food and night before going to bed.

The brushing of teeth should be done properly, back and forth the teeth and gum line.

And it is good you floss before brushing, so as to do away with loosened food and bacteria that may surround the teeth.

Regular visits to your dentist, also prevents gum diseases, by visiting your dentist every six to twelve months for cleaning of your teeth.

How Can You Stop or Reverse Periodontal Diseases Naturally

Apart from regular brushing and flossing of your teeth, there are natural remedies you can use to stop or reverse periodontitis.

They are:

  • Coconut Oil Pulling: In this process, 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil is gargled in the mouth for 20-30 minutes, then you spit it out and rinse the mouth with warm water. Coconut oil also helps to prevent gingivitis (inflammation of the gum due to build-up of plaque) by destroying Streptococcus mutans, which is a bacterium that damages the tooth enamel.
  • Special Toothpaste: To stop or reverse periodontitis, knowing the cause of it and then treating its cause allowing us to achieve the goal. As bacteria is the major cause of plaque build up that eventually leads to periodontal disease.

Any toothpaste that protects the tooth from bacteria will reverse it, especially toothpaste that contains fluoride.

  • Eucalyptus oil: According to a study, Eucalyptus oil has antiinflammatory properties that helps to treat gum recession and also promotes soft tissue growth around the teeth and in addition it is also a germicide that kills bacteria in the mouth.
  • Saltwater Rinse: In addition to being accessible and available, saltwater rinse helps to kill bacteria and soothe gum inflammation.

You only need to mix a teaspoon of salt with warm water, gargle for less than a minute and make sure not to swallow. Doing this daily, can prevent receding gum naturally.

  • Aloe Vera: has numerous health benefits which makes it useful in preventing and treating periodontal diseases.

It helps to reduce gum bleeding, inflammation and swelling of the gum making it useful in gingivitis and periodontitis.

It is also a good antiseptic that can be used as a mouthwash and also has antifungal properties.

  • Green Tea: is a well-known beverage that also has numerous health benefits including cancer and cardiovascular diseases. It also prevent periodontal diseases by limiting the growth of bacteria, reduction of inflammation  and preventing bone resorption.
  • Peppermint Essential Oil: is one of the best essential oils to prevent gum diseases. The menthol present in peppermint acts as a painkiller that helps to numb aches. It also has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that make it useful in receding gums.
  • Septilin: is a mixture of herbs that has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antimicrobial actions. It helps in gum diseases by reducing gum bleeding and reducing gum pocket depth.
  • Turmeric gel: Curcumin is a natural herb that reduces plaque and as well reduces the depth of gum pocket that leads to periodontitis. 
  • Hydrogen Peroxide: is an effective antimicrobial agent that helps with receding gum. Rinsing the mouth with ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide and ¼ cup of warm water and then gargling for 30 seconds will prevent gum diseases.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Melaleuca alternifolia is an essential oil that has broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antifungal and antiinflammatory actions.

It is used as adjunct to conventional treatment of periodontal diseases.

  • Thyme Essential Oil: is also an essential oil used to prevent receding gums. It is added to mouth washes as it gives fresh breath against mouth odor. It also prevents oral and gum infections.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that the human body cannot produce on its own and it's gotten mainly from food. It reduces the signs of gum diseases, maintain a healthy gum, prevent tooth decay and reduce gum inflammation.
  • Gentle Brushing and Flossing: can help remove plaque buildup and debris that can damage gums and teeth.
