What is moringa oleifera?

Also referred to as the “miracle tree” or the “tree of life” due to its astounding health benefits and ability to treat some chronic diseases and various ailments, Moringa oleifera, originating from India,17 colloquially known as Moringa is an important herb that has numerous uses.

Some other names for it are Drumstick Tree, Sajna, Marango, Benzolive, Saijihan, Mulangay, and Mlonge. 

Moringa oleifera is native to North West India, in the sub-Himalayan regions. Thriving globally in almost all sub- and tropical regions, it is native to India, Hawaii, Bangladesh, Philippines, and Afghanistan to name a few.1 Coming from a family comprising 13 species, M.oleifera has risen in popularity due to its various medicinal and non-medicinal purposes. Being utilised as a fertilizer, in the production of biogas, as well as possessing numerous nutritious health benefits.2 Moringa also can tolerate high amounts of drought and can grow in the harshest of conditions in the tropical climate.3 With nearly all parts of the tree being utilised and filled with essential nutrients that are required by the body, it is one of the most reliable and cheapest alternatives out there for the body’s nourishment.4

Accommodating nutrients such as vitamin C, calcium, potassium, protein, omega 3 and 6, and beta-carotene.5 For ages, in numerous cultures, Moringa has been used to treat issues such as anxiety, anaemia, bronchitis, cholera, skin infections, and many other illnesses.5 With further properties where it also can be used as an antioxidant, antipyretic, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive, and anti-inflammatory, amongst others.6 Being used in numerous health care products such as moisturizers and conditions, etc. It has been used in skin ointments and oil since ancient times.

Some claim that Moringa is the ‘most nutrient-rich plant yet discovered.7 It is quite rare for a plant to possess so many health benefits and essential nutrients, especially in such high quantities. With all of its parts ranging from the bark to its seeds, to its fruit, all of the moringa plants can be utilised for one purpose or another. Amongst the various forms in which Moringa is consumed, Moringa tea has emerged to be a popular choice among the masses. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that this might positively affect the body and an individual’s energy levels. 

Nutritional facts about moringa leaves

Moringa oleifera contains high levels of minerals, potassium, calcium, and beta-carotene, as mentioned above. It acts similarly in the way a statin drug would, reducing the formation of plaques within arteries and aiding in the lowering of cholesterol when consumed in a drink every morning.

It also could help in regulating one’s levels of diabetes, hyperglycemia,11 and blood glucose levels.It also has the capability of extending the shelf life of fat-containing foods.9 

When made into a poultice from the leaves, it can help with inflammations, acting as a quick remedy in soothing it. Drinking tea made from its leaves can also help relieve bronchitis and sore throat, as well as headaches.8  

These leaves can be stored as dried powder, fresh, or cooked without refrigeration for months without losing their nutritional benefits.10 Upon boiling, these leaves produced about three times more available iron than raw leaves. 

Providing about 10 times more vitamin A than carrots, 9 times more protein than yoghurt, 15 times more potassium than bananas, 25 times more iron than spinach, and 7 times more vitamin C than oranges. Moringa leaves are packed with a punch and seem to be a great source of energy.12 Known to be a good food source, its leaves are meant to be rich in proteins and easily digestible.13

The leaves possess various amino acids, and numerous vitamins and minerals.14 It is used to feed malnourished and underdeveloped children in developing countries around the world due to all of these benefits it possesses.15  

Protein is a crucial macronutrient when it comes to essential bodybuilding and overall growth. It also gives us the energy necessary to us, via acting on insulin levels and glucose regulation, preventing any energy crashes. It also is a key player in cell energy production as it affects the functioning of the mitochondria. Moringa tea helps reduce fatigue and improve physical capacity and endurance. In a way, it has an opposite effect in comparison with Lavender tea which aids in better sleep and relaxation. 

Not confined to only physical aspects, Moringa tea can also aid with mental energy and better cognitive functioning due to the iron content in it. The iron helps improve blood circulation to the brain, increasing the amount of oxygen available to it, paired with protein to help improve neuron functioning and neuroplasticity in the brain. 

Chronic inflammatory conditions contribute to fatigue and lethargy within the body. Moringa tea helps in reducing inflammation and improving immune system functioning which in turn aids with bettering the energy levels of the individual.

Either physically or mentally, through its high iron and protein content, it is claimed to be extremely beneficial in aiding with improving physical endurance and neuronal connectivity. Able to be consumed daily with a balanced diet of other foods, it does not entirely replace the role of traditional energy drinks. But instead, it can help with bettering the body’s overall functioning and strength. Moringa oleifera is a highly beneficial plant, with a soothing scent and graceful white flowers, its nutritional benefits are being constantly researched and investigated to draw more evidence-based reviews and results as to how this plant can be beneficial to us.
