What is orange blossom water?

Citrus fruit provides so much amazing flavour and alluring fragrances for both sweet as well as savoury cuisine, from the zest to the liquid. Although we are supportive of using fresh ingredients, orange blossom water is another that has the same benefits and should be on your radar. According to Matt Nielson, Orange blossom water, which is also known as the essential oil of neroli, is produced by following the process of water distillation of bitter orange tree’s blossoms. In contrast with pure orange extract, which is made from orange fruit, the orange blossom water is created using the tree’s petals.

According to Nielsen, the art of orange blossom water is not new; in fact, people started distilling the petals to make rich and aromatic orange blossom water for cooking ever since oranges first originated in the Middle East. Anne Marie Orsini, Princess of Nerola and Duchess of Bracciano, utilised the scent of bitter orange tree blooms as a perfume in her baths at the end of the 17th century. Talking about the modern usage of orange blossom water, it is primarily used in perfumes, skin care products, aromatherapy, cosmetics and culinary too. The floral water derives its many health advantages and skin-rejuvenating capabilities from some portions of neroli oil's hydrophilic (which is a scientific term for "water-loving") qualities.

The benefits related to orange blossom water make it essential to understand it in depth, as there are certain drawbacks related to it, too, which should be known and understood well. Below, we will study the chemical composition, benefits, side effects and precautions regarding orange blossom water or neroli oil.

Chemical composition of neroli oil from the aromatic bitter orange tree blossoms

From the aromatic bitter orange tree blossoms, neroli essential oil is made. It happens to be one of the flower oils that is most frequently used in perfumery. By using Gas Chromatography with a flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), the pure essential oil extracted from newly harvested Citrus aurantium L. flowers (Neroli oil) was examined. These flowers are grown in the Nabeul region of north-eastern Tunisia. A total of 33 compounds, or 99% of the oil, were discovered. 14% of Alpha-terpineol, 11.7% of alpha-terpinyl acetate, 8%of (E, E)-farnesol, 17.5% of (E)-nerolidol, 27.5% of limonene, and 14% of (E)-terpineol were the other significant ingredients.1

Antimicrobial and antioxidant characteristics of neroli oil

In a research study by Hsouna et. al. (2013), by using GC-FID and GC-MS, the essential oil of fresh Citrus aurantium L. (CaEO) flowers grown in North East Tunisia (Nabeul) was examined, and the CaEO demonstrated moderate to strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity against the investigated species, according to the results.2

Benefits of orange blossom water

For a variety of health-related reasons, oily in nature, acne-prone, dry, dull, mature, and sensitive skin types typically tolerate orange blossom water well.

Skin tone-up

The extract of orange blossom water functions exceptionally well for persons susceptible to acne and oily complexions by gently assisting in drawing away any oil and contaminants from your skin, purifying your pores, and tightening up your skin. It may also be used as an independent hydrosol or in a professionally formulated toner. Orange blossom water helps to improve the texture of your skin, giving you a youthful glow. Incorporate it into your evening regimen for the best results on skin health.

Reduces inflammatory reaction and irritation

The antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant qualities of orange blossom water, a by-product of neroli oil, aid in better controlling the excessive oil production in your skin and enhancing your skin's defence against free radicals brought on by environmental toxins.

These anti-inflammatory characteristics may be especially helpful for persons with oily and/or acne-prone skin in lowering skin inflammation and irritation, or in soothing sensitive skin that is experiencing a skin rash by minimising the redness that occurs with irritated skin.

Orange blossom water helps heal any bacterial or fungal infections on the scalp in order to lessen irritation and itching, in addition to giving your hair moisture and strength.

Body relaxation and calm

Additionally, orange blossom water has antispasmodic qualities that are excellent for naturally relaxing your muscles and making you feel much calmer. After a stressful day, adding it to your bath water may be very effective to help you relax and improve the value of your downtime and sleep schedule by allowing you to release any tension-related pain or discomfort that has built up over time.

Boosts skin radiance

Orange blossom water, a zesty floral water with skin-brightening effects rich in vitamins C and B complex, helps battle moderate skin discolourations over time and even out skin tone. People with dry, dull, or weary skin who want to enhance their skin's hydration and brightness, enhance their appearance, and balance their skin tone would especially benefit from this.

Precautions and side effects of orange blossom water

Although it is generally regarded as harmless, there are a few warning signs and possible negative consequences to be cautious of:

  • Allergies: Orange blossom water may cause allergic reactions in some people; thus, it is best to conduct an allergy test on a small patch of skin prior to using it more widely, particularly for skincare applications
  • Dilution: Orange blossom water tends to be fairly concentrated; therefore, this is a dilution. To prevent skin irritation or overbearing flavours, dilute it before utilising it in recipes or topically
  • Use in cooking and baking: Be careful when making use of orange blossom water. A tiny amount goes a long way, and too much can overpower your dish's flavour

Side effects

  • Skin Inflammation: Orange blossom water is typically safe for topical application, although on occasion, especially when applied undiluted or on sensitive skin, it may result in skin irritation or redness.
  • Orange blossom water and other citrus-based treatments may increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. After applying sunscreen to your skin, it is beneficial to use it when you are exposed to the sun.
  • Stomach Problems: Consuming too much orange blossom water may cause stomach pain. When utilising it in recipes, just use the recommended serving sizes.
  • Allergic Reactions: Although uncommon, some users of orange blossom water may develop allergic reactions. Seek emergency medical treatment if you experience any allergy symptoms, including swelling, itching, or breathing difficulties.
