Introduction

Your sleep isn’t just about feeling fresh the next day–it’s way deeper than that. Poor sleep can mess with your hormones and immune system, and yes, it’s even tied to chronic conditions like cancer. But what about ovarian cancer, specifically? Can bad sleep increase the risk? Or does cancer itself throw your sleep off balance? In this article, we’ll dig into what the science says about sleep and ovarian cancer, explore how they might be connected, and why it matters more than we think. 

Sleep disturbances

Sleep disturbances have been linked to ovarian cancer risk, progression, and patient outcomes. 

Disrupted circadian rhythm

Poor sleep disrupts your circadian rhythm, which acts like your body’s natural clock. This clock helps regulate hormones and your immune system, both of which are vital in preventing cancer. If your work shifts or lifestyle throws off your sleep schedule, it can impair your body’s ability to detoxify, mess with glucose and fat balance, and even change how certain genes behave, including some linked to tumour growth.1,2

Melatonin's role 

Then there’s melatonin–the hormone that your body naturally releases during sleep. Melatonin isn’t just about helping you doze off; it has proven anti-cancer properties. Studies show that even at normal, low levels, melatonin can slow down the growth of ovarian cancer cells. So, if your sleep is poor or you’re pulling night shifts, your melatonin levels drop, which might contribute to ovarian cancer development.3

Inflammation & immune suppression

Chronic sleep deprivation doesn’t stop there–it also ramps up inflammation and suppresses your immune system. Think about it: when you’re not sleeping enough, your body produces fewer cytokines, those proteins that help clear up infections. This weakens your overall immune defence, making it easier for harmful cells to grow. That is referred to as “The Triad of Sleep, Immunity, and Cancer”.4

 But there’s another side to this issue. People assigned female at birth with ovarian cancer often experience ongoing sleep disturbances for up to a year after their diagnosis. This isn’t just about feeling tired–it can seriously impact their quality of life. Poor sleep combined with depression creates a vicious cycle, making it even harder to recover. While medications might not always do the trick, behavioural strategies to improve sleep and mood can make a significant difference in overall well-being.5

While these points explain the basic connection, there’s more to uncover. How does sleep quality affect ovarian cancer survival rates? What can be done to improve sleep for both prevention and recovery? Keep reading as we explore the science behind it all.

Is there a link between sleep habits and cancer?

The science behind sleep’s role in regulating hormones, stress, and immune function

While you’re asleep, your immune system, hormones, and stress levels all get a chance to reset. Research shows that sleep plays a crucial role in regulating your adaptive and innate immune responses. When your sleep is disrupted, your body’s adaptive immunity–the part that deals with infections–can become weakened, while your innate immune response ramps up, leading to increased inflammation. During sleep, your body releases growth hormone and prolactin, which help T cells grow and function, and promote a healthy balance of cytokines that keep your immune system in check.6

Research findings on sleep deprivation and increased cancer risk

On the flip side, chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt balance. Studies suggest that insufficient sleep disrupts your circadian rhythms and hormonal balance, both of which are key players in cancer prevention. In fact, research has linked long-term sleep deprivation with an increased risk of cancer. It’s almost as if insomnia itself could be a red flag for a higher risk of developing cancer later on.7

In short, getting good sleep isn’t just about feeling fresh–it’s a vital part of maintaining your overall health and reducing your cancer risk. The science is clear: when you don’t follow sleep hygiene, you’re not just sacrificing your energy levels, you’re also disrupting the critical biological processes that protect you from diseases like cancer.4,6,7

The role of melatonin in ovarian health and how its disruption may promote cancer growth

Melatonin plays a vital role in health, including ovarian health. Research suggests that melatonin is involved in key ovarian processes, including steroid hormone synthesis, oocyte maturation, ovulation, and the life cycle of the corpus luteum. When your sleep is disrupted, melatonin levels drop, which could potentially upset these delicate processes and promote cancer growth. Although we don’t fully understand the molecular details yet, it’s clear that maintaining good sleep–and by extension, healthy melatonin levels–is beneficial for ovarian function.3,8

Inflammation and oxidative stress caused by chronic sleep deprivation

We all know that constant sleep loss can leave us feeling worn out, but it also triggers inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. These harmful processes can contribute to cellular damage and, over time, may pave the way for cancer development. On a more positive note, some studies indicate that probiotic supplementation might help counteract the inflammation and oxidative stress linked to chronic sleep deprivation. This suggests that, while poor sleep can set off a chain reaction of negative effects, some strategies may help mitigate these risks.9

Can the disruption of your circadian rhythm increase the risk of ovarian cancer? 

Circadian rhythms–the natural, internal processes that regulate the sleep-wake cycle–are crucial for our overall health. When these rhythms are disrupted, such as by night shift work or erratic sleep schedules, it can have serious implications. Research from large prospective studies has found that people assigned female at birth with rotating work schedules face a higher risk of fatal ovarian cancer. This highlights how important it is to maintain a regular sleep schedule to support your body’s natural defences against cancer.10

Sleep problems in ovarian cancer patients

The cancer itself–and its treatments–can cause significant fatigue. The stress of a diagnosis, the worry over upcoming treatments, and the fear of recurrence often lead to anxiety and depression, all of which make a good night's sleep seem like a distant dream. Moreover, chemotherapy and other treatments can bring on a host of side effects like nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, and night sweats, further disrupting sleep patterns.11

Research has shown that poor sleep isn’t just a minor inconvenience–it can influence survival rates and treatment outcomes. For instance, studies reveal that ovarian cancer patients who reported over 7.5 hours of sleep at night, and more than 8 hours in total, before diagnosis had better overall survival rates. On the flip side, those who slept poorly, especially with late bedtimes or erratic sleep patterns, tended to have lower survival outcomes. This suggests that sleep quality and duration could play a significant role in how well patients fare during their treatment journey.11,12,13

Can improving sleep lower ovarian cancer risk?

The good news is that improving your sleep might help lower your ovarian cancer risk and improve treatment outcomes.14

Lifestyle changes

Start with solid sleep hygiene. Aim for a regular sleep schedule, avoid screens before bed, and create a calming bedtime routine. Don’t underestimate these small adjustments with great impact.1

Melatonin supplementation

Research indicates that melatonin has antiproliferative, antiangiogenic, apoptotic, and immunomodulatory effects in ovarian cancer. Some experts suggest considering melatonin as an adjuvant therapy alongside standard treatment, so it’s worth discussing with your doctor.14

Stress management and relaxation techniques

Chronic stress can severely impact sleep quality. Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or even gentle yoga can help ease your mind and promote better sleep. These practices not only improve sleep but can also help reduce anxiety and improve overall quality of life.

If you’re undergoing ovarian cancer treatment and struggling with sleep, don’t hesitate to bring it up with your healthcare provider. They can offer tailored advice, suggest interventions, or even recommend therapies to help manage sleep disturbances during this challenging time.

Can bad sleep actually cause ovarian cancer?

While poor sleep on its own doesn't directly cause ovarian cancer, it can increase your risk by disrupting hormones, fueling inflammation, and compromising your immune system.

Does melatonin really help prevent cancer?
