Goodbye to the gloomy days, and WELCOME to SUMMER!

That’s right! Summertime is right around the corner, and it always gets us hyped like never before.

Summer is the brightest and sunniest of the four seasons. It’s the time for outdoor activities like beach trips and picnics in the park. It’s also when people travel to the beach, mountains, or explore new towns and customs.

As the heat waves draw closer, we tend to sweat more and faster, making us crave refreshing treats like smoothies and cold beverages.  That’s right-smoothies! Today, you’ll learn how to make delicious passion fruit smoothies and discover the health benefits of this amazing fruit.

Why smoothies?

Smoothies are blended beverages typically made from a mixture of fruits, vegetables, and liquids (such as milk, yogurt, or juice). Additional ingredients like nuts, seeds, oats, ice, and protein powder can also be included.

Here are some reasons why smoothies are a great choice:

Nutritional value

Smoothies are often made from a blend of fruits and vegetables, providing essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants in a single serving, depending on the ingredients used.

Easy to make and customisable

Smoothies are ideal for those who may not have time for sit-down meals because they are easy and quick to prepare. You don’t need to worry much about the ingredients; you can use any fruits or vegetables you have in the fridge and blend them with your choice of proteins and fats, such as nuts, protein powder, milk, or yogurt.  Voila-breakfast is served in less than 15 minutes. Additionally, smoothies make a great choice of snack for those trying to lose weight.

Hydration

The base of smoothies typically includes liquids such as juice, milk, or water. This makes them perfect for staying hydrated during summertime or after physical activity.

About passion fruit

“Passionate by passion fruits”

– Unstoppable Stacey, world travel blogger –

For those who love passion fruit, it’s truly a delight. But what’s not to adore? Originating from South America1, passion fruit has a sweet to tart flavor that enhances any cocktail, smoothie,  or salad with its tropical aroma.

Passion fruit belongs to the Passifloraceae family and comes in several varieties. Here are the four most common types:2

  1. Purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims)
  2. Yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa)
  3. Sweet granadilla (Passiflora ligularis)
  4. Giant granadilla (Passiflora quadrangularis)

Is a passion fruit the same as a Granadilla?

Passion fruit and granadilla are like cousins. Both come from the Passifloraceae family. While they differ in appearance, their tastes are quite similar.

At a glance, passion fruit is relatively smaller than a granadilla. However, many people still find it difficult to notice the difference in size. This is understandable, as both fruits have a round or oval hard rind and are filled with succulent, seed-filled pulp.

However, this changes as the fruits mature. The skin of a passion fruit will wrinkle as it ripens, while the skin of a granadilla remains hard and smooth throughout all stages. Although both yellow, passion fruit and sweet granadilla are yellow to orange in color, the difference lies in the pulp inside. Passion fruit has small black seeds covered with bright orange pulp, while granadilla has larger, lighter-colored black seeds with transparent pulp.

Health benefits of passion fruit

Passion fruit not only enhances the flavor and colour of dishes but also offers numerous health benefits. In South American folk medicine, passion fruit has been widely used to treat asthma, bronchitis, and urinary infections, as well as to reduce mental distress such as anxiety and insomnia.4

Respectively, all tropical fruits are rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, making them beneficial for health. To summarize, here  are five  health advantages of passion fruit:

Boosts your Immune system

High levels of vitamin C act as an immune booster by activating white blood cells and other defense systems. Additionally, as an antioxidant, vitamin C helps eliminate free radicals that could otherwise compromise immunity.

Improves digestion and reduces constipation

Passion fruit is a good source of dietary fiber, which is well known for preventing and alleviating constipation. Dietary fibers facilitate bowel regularity by either softening or solidifying the stool, depending on what is needed.

Unlike other food components such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, fiber cannot be digested and absorbed by the digestive system. Instead, it increases the weight and size of your stool and absorbs extra water. This helps make the stool bulkier and ensures its consistency is smooth or solid enough to be easily passed.

As a result, the problem of hemorrhoids can be significantly reduced,  as stool is passed more easily. Additionally, studies referenced by the Mayo Clinic indicate that a diet high in fiber-rich foods is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.7

Improves blood circulation

Minerals, such as potassium and iron are essential for creating and maintaining good blood circulation. Potassium helps relax blood vessels, which is beneficial for lowering blood pressure, as it allows for smoother blood flow and reduces pressure within the vessels.

Iron also plays a crucial role in blood production. It ensures that the circulatory system has enough blood cells, which bind to oxygen and transport nutrients throughout the body.

Improves bone health

Phenolic acids and flavonoids, which are abundant in vegetables and fruits, including passion fruit, have high antioxidant activity. Antioxidants possess anti-inflammatory properties, which may help prevent the development of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis, which is more prevalent among the elderly,  is a condition characterized by the deterioration of bone health. It results in the loss of minerals, such as calcium, that give bones their strength, leading to brittle bones and an increased risk of fractures. Research has revealed that inflammation is a contributing factor to osteoporosis, and the anti-inflammatory compounds found in passion fruit may help mitigate this inflammation.

Keeps your skin healthy

The use of antioxidants and vitamin C helps keep your skin healthy.  Antioxidants eliminate free radicals, which significantly accelerate skin aging. Additionally vitamin C assists in collagen production , leading to firmer, more toned  skin with a radiant glow.
