The yellow passion fruit is larger, approximately 6-9cm in size and the purple is 4-9cm.1 The fruit has a hard outer shell which is cut open to a runny juicy seeded centre. This exotic fruit grows in subtropical climates and is popular worldwide for its range of benefits from taste, cosmetic uses and as a remedy in folk medicine. With great nutritional value, passionfruit is a great addition to any diet. Passionfruit is also believed to aid in weight loss. In this article, we will explore the nutritional profile of passionfruit and reach a conclusion as to whether passionfruit can in fact help with weight loss.

Low-Calorie fruit
Passionfruit is a low-calorie fruit. This low-calorie amount combined with high fibre means that it is a low energy-dense fruit and lets us feel full quicker, which can be useful when trying to manage weight.
High fibre content
Passionfruit is dense in carbohydrates, and most of the macronutrients of the fruit are concentrated in the seeds. Most notably, passion fruit contains a significant amount of dietary fibre, making up 40% of recommended DI.
Antioxidants and metabolism
The pulp and juice of the passion fruit are rich in vitamin C and several other important minerals, such as potassium, iron and magnesium. Vitamin C is a fantastic mineral and antioxidant which aids in the absorption of other minerals such as iron. Passionfruit has a higher antioxidant activity than other tropical fruits such as mango, pineapple, banana and litchi. Passionfruit has a low glycemic index, which means it slowly releases sugars into the body when it is broken down. This is advantageous for diabetics as eating passion fruit will not cause a spike in blood sugar. Eating a diet full of low-GI foods has been shown to help with weight loss by reducing hunger and cravings between meals.

Passionfruit also has a dense water concentration which is excellent for hydration and removing toxins from the body.
