Cantaloupe, a dietary powerhouse of the melon family, offers a plethora of health benefits which enable it to rule both palates and sales charts globally. With its sugary flavour, versatile culinary uses, and remarkable nutrient profile, cantaloupe is an excellent option for individuals seeking a wholesome and flavourful addition to their daily meals.
The eye's structure is designed for the fundamental purpose of sight, a basal sense that shapes our understanding of the world. The lens, retina, and optic nerve work in synergy to capture and transmit visual information to the brain. Sight is very valuable, enabling us to navigate our surroundings, connect with others, and appreciate the beauty of our environment.
When asked, more than half of those aged 45-65 named vision as their most important sense, therefore, its absence impacts daily life, limiting independence and diminishing the overall quality of experiences.1 Preserving eye health is crucial, and we will now explore what impact cantaloupe can have on eye function.
Noticeable nutrients
Among its notable nutritional profile, cantaloupe bears a wide array of antioxidants6, making it an excellent contender against oxidative stress in the eyes. Free radicals (unstable molecules) can damage cells, including those in the eyes. The antioxidants found in cantaloupe serve as protective agents by neutralising these free radicals, particularly in eyes due to their high metabolic rate. This defence mechanism helps reduce oxidative stress, preserving eye health and potentially lowering the risk of age-related eye conditions.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant present in cantaloupe, recognized for its immunity-boosting characteristic, and contributes to maintaining the fitness of blood vessels in the eyes.2,7 Damage to these vessels with age can lead to a range of eye conditions, from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to blindness. Vitamin C can also manage the regeneration of vitamin E in the eyes, further aiding excellent perfusion.7
On the other hand, vitamin A prevails as a critical contributor to the function of the retina. The retina, located at the back of the eye, contains light-sensitive cells vital to the visual process. They allow us to percieve the world in more detail, detecting colour, contrast, shadows, light, and depth. Cantaloupe's abundance of vitamin A supports retinal function, contributing to sharper vision and overall eye wellness.2 Daily recommended intake sits at 900 micrograms for men and 700 micrograms for women.3
This fruit’s high vitamin A content also aids night blindness prevention. Night blindness hinders the eyes' ability to adjust to low-light conditions and is medically known as nyctalopia. The incorporation of cantaloupe into your diet can aid prevention of this condition, helping the eyes to maintain their adaptability in light-shifting environments.4 Furthermore, vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of the cornea, the clear coating of your eye which allows you to see.5
Along with its antioxidant properties, beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, works synergistically to support vision and prevent night blindness.2,8 Lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids found in cantaloupe, are concentrated in the retina and are associated with a lower risk of late AMD. This is good because although early-stage AMD can be difficult to prevent, sufficient lutein and zeaxanthin can restrain the progress of these conditions. Interestingly, the intake of these 3 antioxidant carotenoids (beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) all affect each other.
A very high intake of beta carotene decreases lutein and zeaxanthin absorption, whereas increased lutein or zeaxanthin intake both increase the accumulation of the other in the retina. Absorption of these carotenoids is also very complicated, and therefore it isn’t entirely clear how they affect each other, just that they do.11 But it is clear that digesting foods rich in these (like cantaloupe) should be done with fat-rich foods like milk, yoghurt or cheese to maximise absorption.
Reduced risk of eye conditions
AMD is a common eye disease that is frequently linked to ageing. New research highlights the critical connection between diet and AMD prevention, with cantaloupe significantly lowering the risk due to its high nutritious content. It has been demonstrated that the antioxidants in cantaloupe, especially lutein and zeaxanthin, accumulate in the retina and shield it from oxidative damage7 offering a natural and delicious approach to supporting long-term ocular health.
Cataracts, a common age-related eye condition that afflicts approximately 33% of all eye patients, can be prevented by the presence of antioxidants in one's diet. Cantaloupe, with its robust antioxidant profile, may help in this task. Antioxidants counteract oxidative stress, reducing the likelihood of clouding in the eye's lens.
Scientific studies have supported this connection, revealing a positive correlation between antioxidant intake and a decreased risk of cataract development. Intake of more than 6.5 fruit/ veg a week decreased the risk of developing this eye condition significantly compared to only 2 pieces of fruit/ veg in this timeframe.8 However, varying results of decreased cataract development were found in populations in India, Australia, UK and Japan in terms of which particular fruit/ veg produced this effect.
Furthermore, nutrient variance is often also found between organic and genetically modified fruits, therefore it is best to eat a variety of fruit and veg to ensure that a vast array of minerals and nutrients are available to the body at all times. Often, eating a ‘rainbow’ of fruit can ensure that a range of different vitamins are absorbed, and overall health can be maintained. Furthermore, 75% of the population is chronically dehydrated, which over time can lead to health issues in the eyes.10
The inside of your eye has liquid called vitreous humour which maintains pressure within the eye, but dehydration can leave this lacking. Consequently, issues ranging from retinal vein occlusion to diabetic retinopathy can result, all leading to decreased vision.12,13
