Incorporating many vegetables and fruits into your diet is essential to promoting your well-being. One of the proven fruits that helps promote eye health is pineapple.
Pineapple, which is botanically known as Ananas Comosus, is a tasty tropical plant with edible fruit that is highly rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and other nutrients that help to slow down the progression of conditions that could lead to loss of vision.

Before we go further into how the pineapple has been proven to help prevent the development of some ocular diseases. I would briefly explain what the organ, the eye is, to give you a clearer picture of which part of the eye is affected in the individual ocular disease we will be discussing.
The eye2 is a complex and intricate sensory organ responsible for vision in humans and animals. It functions by capturing and interpreting light through a series of sophisticated mechanisms. The main components of the human eye include the cornea, sclera, lens, iris, retina, and optic nerve.
One crucial aspect of the eye's anatomy is the vitreous humour, a gel-like substance found in the posterior segment of the eye. The vitreous humour, along with the aqueous humour, plays a vital role in maintaining the eye's shape and providing support to its structures.
- Cornea: The transparent front part of the eye that helps focus light
- Sclera: The white part of the eye that surrounds the cornea
- Lens: A crystalline structure that adjusts its shape to focus light onto the retina
- Iris: The coloured part of the eye that regulates the size of the pupil, controlling the amount of light entering the eye
- Retina: A light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye containing photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) that convert light into electrical signals
- Optic nerve: These electrical signals are transmitted from the retina to the brain, where they are interpreted as visual images
- Aqueous humour: A clear, watery fluid filling the anterior chamber of the eye, located between the cornea and the lens. It helps maintain intraocular pressure, provides nutrients to the lens and cornea, and contributes to the eye's optical properties
- Vitreous humour: A gel-like substance filling the posterior segment of the eye, between the lens and the retina. It provides structural support to the eye, helps maintain the spherical shape of the eye, and holds the retina in place. It also assists in transmitting light to the retina for visual perception
The eyes work together to provide depth perception and a three-dimensional view of the world. The entire process of vision involves the conversion of light into nerve impulses, which are then transmitted to the brain for interpretation.
Pineapple and common eye conditions
Eye floaters
Floaters are small thread-like shapes that float within your vitreous humour and cast tiny shadows on your retina as a result of the liquefaction of vitreous humour due to ageing. Most people have floaters that come and go, and they often don't need treatment. But sometimes floaters can be a sign of a more serious eye condition.
A study4 that was conducted in Taiwan to estimate the pharmacologic effect of pineapple consumption over 3 months to treat floaters showed that at the end of the study, a group of individuals with multiple floaters reduced from 70 patients to 19 patients, and the percentage of 120 patients with one floater which successfully disappeared decreased to only 35 patients.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition that damages your optic nerve due to an increase in your intraocular pressure (pressure within the eyes). Pineapples contain a lot of potassium, which has been shown to lower blood pressure. While blood pressure and intraocular pressure are not always related, there is evidence that lower blood pressure minimises the risk of glaucoma in general.
