There have been only a few documented cases worldwide, and the syndrome is believed to follow an X-linked inheritance pattern, which means the genetic change is located on the X chromosome. This may account for the higher number of males reported with the condition, even though both males and females can be affected. As X-linked conditions can be passed down, understanding your family's medical history can assist doctors in evaluating the risk and guide genetic testing if needed.

  • Learning difficulties, where children may have moderate to severe intellectual disability and delays in growth

  • Skeletal abnormalities, which affect the bones in the hands, and growth overall, resulting in short height
  • Other health problems can include possible hearing loss, feeding and speech difficulties due to issues with the nerves that control the face and mouth, and high-arched or flat feet

Common facial features associated with Palister-W Syndrome include:

  • Wide forehead
  • Widely spaced eyes, eyelids that tilt downward
