Introduction

Who doesn’t love strawberries? Their vibrant colour and sweet flavour make strawberries perfect for desserts, smoothies, and of course, to be eaten just as they are. But strawberries also pack a strong punch of nutrients and are excellent supplements for your health. Strawberries are rich sources of vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium, folic acid, and manganese. But did you know that strawberries are also natural mood enhancers?

Natural mood-enhancing foods boost dopamine and serotonin levels in your brain. Eating natural mood-enhancement foods, like strawberries, blueberries, legumes, etc. can have varied effects, such as improving your mood, psychological well-being, emotional stability, cognitive functioning, etc. Combined with a healthy lifestyle, physical activity, relaxation techniques, and other dietary choices, mood-boosting foods can impact your life for the better.

In this article, we’ll be exploring how strawberries can boost your mood and enhance your daily life. We’ll also take a look into the nutritional makeup of strawberries without going too much into the technical details. Finally, you can read on to find out more about the nutritional benefits of strawberries and how you can make them a part of your diet.

Nutritional composition of strawberries

Read on to find out the various vitamins, minerals, and dietary factors that make strawberries a wonderful addition to your diet.

Vitamin C: Strawberries are not just visually appealing; they are also packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Their high vitamin C content stands out, with 60mg per 100g of fresh fruit. Vitamin C helps heal infections and wounds, produces collagen in the skin, and most importantly, is involved in the production of hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain, which might be related to mood regulation.1 Vitamin C also works as an antioxidant that helps combat oxidative stress. This stress, caused by free radicals in the body, can affect your mood and overall well-being.

B Vitamins: Strawberries are also a source of B vitamins, though at a lower level. These include B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine). These vitamins are involved in various metabolic processes, and B6, for instance, plays a crucial role in brain development and function. A deficiency in certain B vitamins can lead to mood disorders, making strawberries a valuable source of these nutrients.

Potassium: Potassium, another essential mineral found in strawberries, is important for neural and muscular functions. It helps maintain proper nerve transmission and muscle contraction, both of which are linked to mood regulation. An adequate intake of potassium can contribute to emotional stability.

Dietary Fiber: Strawberries are also rich in dietary fibre, which has multiple benefits. Fibre contributes to feelings of fullness, making it a valuable component for weight management. It also plays a role in maintaining stable blood sugar levels, which can have a direct impact on mood stability. Fluctuations in blood sugar can lead to mood swings and irritability, so the steadying effect of dietary fibre is a valuable contribution.

In summary, the nutritional composition of strawberries is a testament to their potential mood-enhancing properties. From their high vitamin C content, B vitamins, and potassium to their dietary fibre, strawberries offer a nutrient-packed package that can support both your physical and emotional well-being. By making strawberries a regular part of your diet, you're not just savouring a delicious fruit, but also nourishing your mood in a wholesome way.

Impact of strawberries on mood

The mood-enhancing benefits of strawberries are related to the presence of vitamin C, an antioxidant that combats oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is defined as the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body.

Free radicals are molecules containing oxygen that are highly reactive, causing oxidation. Oxidation can be harmful or beneficial, while oxidative stress is harmful to the different cells and structures involved in your body’s functioning. It can

  • Cause chronic diseases
  • Interfere with neurological function, causing neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s
  • Speed up the ageing process
  • Affect the blood vessels, proteins, and lipids
  • Cause cancer and other lifestyle disorders

Antioxidants, on the other hand, have a structure that enables them to stabilise the reactive nature of free radicals. Thus, they can combat and prevent oxidative stress.

A 2012 study conducted on students between the ages of 18-35 years in New Zealand revealed that vitamin C consumption is negatively correlated to instances of depression, anger, and confusion. The study also found out that people with adequate vitamin C levels have elevated moods.2

The mood-enhancing properties of strawberries are related also to their seeds. Strawberry seeds contain an omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, the consumption of which is associated with a lower risk of depression.

Another 2023 research was conducted in California, USA on a slightly overweight middle-aged population with complaints of mild cognitive decline. The results revealed that the participants who consumed strawberry powder had an improvement in executive ability, reduced memory interference, as well as a reduction in depressive symptoms. These effects were associated with the presence of antioxidants called anthocyanins, the pigment that gives strawberries their bright colour.3

Finally, the dietary fibre in strawberries can help in maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Fluctuations in blood sugar can lead to mood swings and irritability, so the steadying effect of dietary fibre can be beneficial.

Additionally, strawberries due to their vitamin and mineral composition are beneficial to skin health, especially in the production of collagen. They also improve digestion due to the presence of dietary fibres as well as safeguard health.

Incorporating strawberries into the diet

Now that we've uncovered the potential mood-enhancing benefits of strawberries, you might be wondering how to make these delectable fruits a regular part of your diet. Fortunately, there are numerous delightful and easy ways to do just that. Considerations and precautions

Now that you’ve read through the benefits of strawberries in mood enhancement among several other aspects, you’d want to include them in your diet. But before this, please look into whether you might be allergic to strawberries.

The compound Frageria Allergen 1 (Fra a1) in strawberries can trigger allergies in people. The compound is responsible for the vibrant red colour of strawberries as they ripen.3 Allergic reactions can primarily take three forms:

  1. People already diagnosed with oral allergy syndrome (OAS) may be allergic to strawberries, as well as other fruits and vegetables. The allergy typically takes the form of itching, tingling, and swelling of the mouth and throat.
  2. The most severe allergic reaction to strawberries is pseudo-anaphylaxis, which can be fatal. Pseudoanaphylaxis is a ‘false allergy’ caused by the release of histamine on encountering ‘histamine liberators’. Histamine is a chemical released by your immune system which is responsible for allergies. The histamine liberator in the case of a strawberry allergy is the strawberry. The symptoms of pseudoanaphylaxis can be
    1. Difficulty breathing
    2. Choking
    3. Swelling of the tongue and throat
    4. Increased heart rate
  3. Other common allergy symptoms like hives, rashes, redness, itchiness, and bumps on the skin can also be caused by strawberries if you are allergic to them.
