Tea tree oil has been used for years because of its antimicrobial and antifungal properties.3 But does it really treat toenail fungus? In this article, we'll look at the science behind tea tree oil, what research says about its benefits, and how to use it correctly. What Is Tea Tree Oil?
Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia shrub, which is indigenous to Australia. This essential oil has been used for nearly a century, mainly for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.4 The oil contains several compounds, but the most notable is terpinen-4-ol. This compound is largely responsible for tea tree oil's antimicrobial effects.4,5
However, studies have shown that tea tree oil can fight various fungi, including those causing fungal infections.6 Its antifungal property is mainly due to the compound terpinen-4-ol, which breaks the cell membranes of fungi, ultimately leading to their death.7
Moreover, indigenous Australians used to crush the tea tree leaves to treat coughs, colds, and various types of wounds. They also made teas to soothe their sore throats and skin ailments.8
In modern times, tea tree oil is found in various products such as shampoos, creams, and even mouthwashes. It's also commonly used to address skin conditions such as acne, athlete's foot, and dandruff.3,9 However, while some studies support these uses, more research is needed to confirm their effectiveness across all these applications.
How Tea Tree Oil Works Against Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common condition that causes thickening, discolouration, and crumbling of the toenails.10,11 But how should you apply it to toenail fungus? Here's an easy explanation that is based on scientific research.
Direct Application Method (Diluted vs. Undiluted)
The affected toenail can be cured directly with tea tree oil. However, it’s important to know whether to use it by diluting or undiluting.3
- Undiluted Tea Tree Oil—You can apply it directly to the toenail, but only if your skin can bear it. Tea tree oil is slightly acidic and can irritate your skin
- Diluted Tea Tree Oil—If you have sensitive skin, it’s safer to dilute the tea tree oil with a carrier oil. The typical dilution is 1-2 drops of tea tree oil per tablespoon of carrier oil
Tea Tree Oil in Foot Soaks or Creams
An alternative way to use tea tree oil is to add it to foot soaks or use creams containing it. Soaking your feet in warm water with a few drops of tea tree oil can help soften the skin and nails, clean the nails, and improve the oil's absorption.
- Foot Soak—Add about 5–10 drops of tea tree oil to a bowl of warm water and soak your feet for 15-20 minutes

Research on Tea Tree Oil for Fungal Infections
The antifungal activity of tea tree oil against the common fungi that cause skin and nail infections was tested in one paper published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. The researchers found that tea tree oil was effective in killing fungi, including Trichophyton rubrum, which is responsible for athlete’s foot and ringworm.3,14
In another study, published in Microorganisms (NCBI), researchers looked at the antifungal properties of tea tree oil against Candida species, which cause yeast infections. The study concluded that tea tree oil effectively suppressed the growth of Candida albicans, a common cause of yeast infections, particularly in the mouth and the genital area.15
Tea Tree Oil vs. Standard Antifungal Medications
When compared to traditional antifungal drugs, research suggests that tea tree oil can be just as effective as other over-the-counter drugs; however, the results might take longer to show up.16
As an example, the study in The Medical Journal of Australia compared clotrimazole, a common antifungal cream, to tea tree oil for treating tinea corporis or ringworm. After four weeks of application, both treatments showed similar results, but the tea tree oil became the choice for being more cost-effective and more natural.17
In a separate study published by the International Journal of Dermatology, it was suggested that tea tree oil is beneficial in the treatment of fungal disorders, such as tinea pedis or athlete's foot, but not as effective as the prescribed antifungal therapy of terbinafine, which is fast.18 It was suggested in the study that, in the case of severe infections, more effective results will be achieved by using a combination of drugs.
Potential Side Effects and Risks of Tea Tree Oil
While tea tree oil has many benefits, it's important to know the potential side effects and risks, especially if you're using it regularly.
Skin Sensitivity and Irritation
One of the most common side effects of tea tree oil is skin sensitivity. Some people may experience redness, itching, or a rash when they apply it to their skin. This happens because tea tree oil can be strong, and not all skin types react the same way to it.
According to studies, tea tree oil can cause irritation if it's used in large amounts or without being diluted.19 If you have sensitive skin, using undiluted tea tree oil directly on the skin is not recommended. Instead, mix it with a carrier oil, like coconut, olive oil, or jojoba oil, to reduce the chance of irritation.
If you notice redness, swelling, or a rash after using tea tree oil, it’s important to stop using it immediately. The irritation will usually go away once the oil is removed from your skin. If it doesn't, or if the reaction is severe, you should seek medical attention.

While there is limited research done on the effects of tea tree oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it’s better to stay on the safe side. It's always best to consult your healthcare provider before using tea tree oil if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.20
Children
Tea tree oil is generally not recommended for young children, especially those under 2 years old. Children's skin is more sensitive, and there have been reports of reactions when tea tree oil was used on babies.21 Always consult with a doctor before using any essential oils on children.
People with Allergies
If you're allergic to plants in the Myrtaceae family (like eucalyptus or clove), you might also be allergic to tea tree oil.22,23 If you know you have these types of allergies, it's better to avoid tea tree oil altogether.
