Introduction

Transcendental Meditation refers to a meditative technique that promotes mental relaxation and clarity. It involves sitting comfortably with closed eyes and repeating a specific mantra for about 15-20 minutes.1 Unlike other techniques which require concentration and mindfulness, transcendental meditation helps the mind settle into a state of rest and awareness. This practice has been widely studied to understand its benefits on both physical and mental health.2

Ageing poses a significant burden on healthcare and well-being. As individuals age, they tend to experience physical decline, cognitive impairment and are more susceptible to chronic diseases.3 Factors such as inflammation, cellular damage, accelerated aging and stress diminish optimal brain function. Consequently, the effect of meditation practices as a lifestyle and health intervention to slow age-related cognitive decline and improve brain function is of increasing interest.

This article explores the effects of transcendental meditation on longevity and brain ageing; as a means ofimproving cardiovascular health, enhancing cognitive function and promoting longer and healthier lives.

Understanding Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation is a type of meditation technique developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s. Drawing from the principles of Vedic traditions, Maharishi introduced transcendental meditation as a technique to reduce mental and physical stress and enhance clarity of thought, thereby improving physical and mental well-being. It differs from other techniques in that it does not require much attention or concentration. While techniques such as mindfulness involve observing thoughts from an outsider’s perspective, regulating breathing and focusing on the present, transcendental meditation helps the mind settle spontaneously. By repeating a specific mantra provided by an instructor, transcendental meditation helps induce a deep state of relaxation.4 Studies have also demonstrated the same through observing brainwave activity showing heightened cognitive function.

Studies have demonstrated that practising transcendental meditation facilitates the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, and reduces the release of stress hormones such as cortisol. This biochemical release induces a state of relaxation and emotional well-being.5 On a neurological level, practising transcendental meditation facilitates increased coherence in brainwave activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for emotional regulation and decision making, and is also associated with improved memory and creativity.6 Moreover, physiologically, the body observes a reduce in blood pressure and improved circulation levels.7 Over long periods of time, reduced inflammation contributes to increased telomerase activity to slow cellular ageing.8 Coupled with psychological improvements in well-being, these changes help develop an increased resilience towards age-related physical and cognitive decline, thereby supporting longevity.

Benefits of transcendental meditation on longevity

Biological ageing – cellular and genetic factors

At a cellular level, ageing is influenced by processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation and telomere shortening.9 Telomeres are protective caps at the end of chromosomes that shorten when cells divide; if they become too short, cells lose their ability to regenerate and function, which contributes to the deterioration of tissues and eventual degeneration. Studies have outlined how inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to telomere shortening and premature ageing.10 

Transcendental meditation counteracts this process by enhancing telomerase activity. Telomerase is an enzyme responsible for maintaining appropriate telomere length. By lowering stress hormone levels and promoting antioxidant activity, transcendental meditation helps slow the process of ageing.11 Individuals who practice transcendental meditation show lower levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), which is a key marker for systemic inflammation, linking to heart disease and ageing.12

Cognitive ageing – changes in brain structure and function

As individuals age, the brain undergoes changes in structure and function – such as a decline in gray matter volume in regions associated with memory, learning and executive function. Regions like the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex are particularly vulnerable to age-related shrinkage in volume, which can affect decision making and executive function.13

Practicing transcendental meditation has shown to enhance brain connectivity and strengthen the default mode network (DMN), playing a crucial role in cognitive processing, self-awareness, and metacognition.14

Those who practice transcendental meditation regularly have shown an increase in synchronisation between brain regions, facilitating memory retention, problem solving skills and emotional stability. Moreover, meditation practice has also been linked to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports neuronal growth, repair and survival.15

Psychological and emotional aspects of ageing

Ageing brings about psychological challenges such as increased stress, anxiety and depression. Transitioning into old age, adjusting to retirement, experiencing the loss of loved ones, and declining health negatively impacts emotional well-being. Chronic stress may also increase cortisol levels, impair brain function, weaken the immune system and contribute to cardiovascular disease.

Transcendental meditation helps to significantly lower cortisol levels, thereby lowering stress. Many studies have identified numerous benefits to transcendental meditation – such as improved mood, reduced symptoms of depression, and greater emotional stability. By activating the parasympathetic system, transcendental meditation helps induce a state of relaxation and also improves emotional resilience and coping.16 

Reduction in neurodegeneration – TM and Alzheimer’s/Dementia prevention

Transcendental meditation plays a key role in preventing the onset of neurodegenerative proteinopathies such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. These conditions are characterised by cognitive decline and memory loss, due to the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibillary tau tangles in the brain. Some of the major contributors to neurodegeneration are stress and inflammation.

Transcendental meditation enhances neuroplasticity and improves blood flow, which helps maintain cognitive function. Additionally, it also assists in the removal of toxins from the blood through the glymphatic system, and helps clear waste products associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.17

Enhanced sleep quality and stress resilience

Age is associated with a decline in sleep quality. As one ages, individuals may experience problems such as insomnia, fragmented sleep or decreased sleep cycles. These conditions are closely linked to stress levels and may be a contributing factor to cognitive impairment, making one susceptible to chronic diseases. Transcendental meditation helps improve sleep quality by promoting deep relaxation, reducing hyperactivity in the nervous system. Meditative practices are also known to reduce nighttime awakenings and induce deep sleep (slow-wave), which is a crucial process for physical restoration and memory consolidation.18 

Improved social and emotional connectivity 

Apart from the physical and cognitive benefits, individuals who practice transcendental meditation have also reported better emotional health and coping towards social isolation. Transcendental meditation helps foster a sense of emotional balance by reducing stress and anxiety, allowing individuals to express greater empathy and develop emotional connections. Studies have revealed that practising transcendental meditation facilitates an increase in oxytocin levels, which helps promote feelings of trust and intimacy.19

Practical applications and recommendations

To fully reap the benefits of transcendental meditation, it is important to integrate it into daily life with consistency. Research shows that practicing transcendental meditation for about 20 to 30 minutes twice a day improves cognitive and physical health, as well as overall emotional well-being. As this type of meditation does not require much physical exertion, it is easily accessible to older individuals. Results are more noticeable when the practice is integrated with one’s morning and night routine over a long period of time.20
