Various treatment options are available for intertrigo, including using drying agents like antiperspirants to reduce moisture accumulation. Additionally, applying products like Triple Paste, which contains aluminium acetate and zinc oxide, can help alleviate skin irritation caused by friction.3

Absorbent powders and topical treatments, such as antimicrobial or antifungal creams, are commonly prescribed based on the type of intertrigo present. For resistant infections, oral medications like fluconazole or antibiotics may be necessary. A small sample of the affected skin was examined under a microscope. This sample is stained with potassium hydroxide (KOH) or calcofluor white, which helps highlight any fungal elements present, such as Candida. By closely examining the sample, doctors can identify specific structures like pseudo-hyphae or yeast forms, indicative of Candida infection.5

In some cases, doctors may use additional tests to complement their findings. Fluorescent microscopy or trypan blue staining, for instance, can provide a clearer view of Candida organisms, to confirm the diagnosis.5

In undiagnosed cases, more tests are required. Culturing the sample in a laboratory setting allows for the growth of Candida, facilitating analysis to determine the specific type causing the infection. While valuable, these tests may require more time to yield results.5

Rarely, highly specialized tests like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or electron microscopy may be employed, typically reserved for complex cases.   3. Diabetes Mellitus: Poorly controlled blood sugar levels heighten intertrigo risk, especially in the inguinal region. 
  4. Urinary Incontinence: Females with urinary incontinence face an elevated risk, especially in areas like the sub-mammary folds and gluteal clefts, due to moist conditions. 
  5. Skin Folds: Intertrigo commonly occurs where skin folds overlap, creating a warm, moist environment ideal for microbial overgrowth and inflammation.6

Complications of intertrigo

Complications from intertrigo, especially for people with diabetes, mainly arise from infections. These infections thrive in warm, moist skin folds affected by intertrigo. Improper care can worsen the rash and lead to problems. That's why people with intertrigo, especially those with diabetes, need to see a doctor promptly to prevent and manage infections. 

One serious complication of untreated intertrigo is cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection causing redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected area. For people with diabetes, who may have weaker immune systems, cellulitis can quickly become serious if not treated promptly. Intertrigo must be diagnosed and treated early to stop the infection from spreading and causing more problems. 

In severe cases, intertrigo can lead to hidden ulcers, especially in overweight individuals or those with poorly managed diabetes. These ulcers can let bacteria enter the body, raising the risk of a life-threatening condition called sepsis, where the body's response to infection can become harmful. Also, some treatments for intertrigo, like antifungal creams or steroids, can cause skin reactions like dermatitis or thinning skin if used for a long time.
