Are blueberries beneficial to your eyes? YES, there are! 

Blueberries are one of the superfoods that can help keep your eyes healthy. By including blueberries in your diet, you get a natural and delicious way to support your eye health. These tiny amazing berries are packed with nutrients including vitamins and minerals which will help protect your eyes. Not just that, they also help prevent several common eye conditions you are familiar with like glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration! 1,2 Moreover, blueberries are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds as well as flavonoids such as anthocyanins, which can protect your eyes and improve your vision health over time.2

Understanding the science behind these blueberries' amazing ability to support eye health will help you to modify dietary choices that can improve not just your vision but also your general health.

Among the above-mentioned nutrients,  some specific ones are exceptionally beneficial for maintaining optimal eye health. These include: 

Vitamin C

Blueberries are a great source of vitamin C which acts as a strong antioxidant. It means that it can protect your eye cells from damage caused by free radicals (reactive molecules that can damage your eye cells) especially if you're exposed to sunlight. These free radicals increase the risk of developing disorders like cataracts,  which can cloud the lens of your eye. However, vitamin C found in blueberries can neutralize these harmful free radicals produced, thereby keeping the tissues of your eyes healthy.5

Moreover, vitamin C can also support the health of blood vessels in your eyes. This in turn will improve blood circulation and enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the eye tissues, maintaining their function and overall health. As a result, it helps reduce the risk of conditions like cataracts and diabetic retinopathy (especially significant for people with diabetes).5

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is crucial for maintaining your eye health by supporting the function of a protein known as matrix Gla protein (MGP). This MGP assists in regulating the pressure inside your eyes, which is essential for keeping them healthy and also for preventing conditions like glaucoma. Additionally, adequate intake of vitamin K may also help protect against cataracts. 6

Vitamin E

Vitamin E  offers protection to the cells in your eyes from damage caused by oxidative stress. It also helps to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.7, 8

Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants found in blueberries that give them their vibrant deep blue colour! Not only that, these antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting your eyes by shielding the retina from oxidative stress, inflammation, and abnormal growth of blood vessels. This protection is essential for maintaining overall eye health.2 

Anthocyanins support the collagen structure in the retina, which helps protect against damage from UV light and may improve vision. Moreover, clinical studies have shown that regular consumption of anthocyanins can improve blood flow to the eyes and stabilize visual field defects, particularly in glaucoma patients.9

Lutein and zeaxanthin

Antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are present in blueberries, are essential for eye health. These compounds absorb blue light and neutralize harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species eg free radicals. As a result, they reduce the risk of age-related diseases including macular degeneration and cataracts by protecting the eye's lens and retina from the oxidative damage that light exposure produces.10

Quercetin and pterostilbene

Inflammation plays a significant role in various eye diseases, including AMD and diabetic retinopathy. Blueberries contain anti-inflammatory compounds that help reduce inflammation in the eyes. Specifically, flavonoids like quercetin and pterostilbene found in blueberries inhibit inflammatory pathways and reduce the production of inflammatory molecules.11, 12

Studies demonstrating blueberries' beneficial effects on eyesight

Numerous investigations and studies have demonstrated the potential benefits of blueberries for maintaining excellent vision and serving as a defence against a range of eye conditions.

  • A study of over 35,000 women aged 45 and older linked higher blueberry consumption to a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration. Furthermore, dietary anthocyanin consumption also showed a modest decrease in the risk of cataracts13
  • Another study found that the anthocyanin extracts from blueberries had a strong protective impact on the cells of the retinal pigment epithelium, which is essential for the health of the retina14
  • Another research indicated that blueberry anthocyanins protect eye cells from high glucose damage by boosting antioxidant defences and reducing inflammation, offering potential benefits for preventing diabetic eye complications15
  • In another study, dietary supplementation of blueberries has also been shown to protect the retina from light-induced damage by inhibiting lipid peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids (a process where certain fats in the eye are damaged by light which might harm vision). Blueberry polyphenols, particularly the flavonoid-rich fraction containing quercetin, play a crucial role in this protective effect11
  • Pterostilbene, a natural component of blueberries, protects human corneal epithelial cells from inflammation and oxidative stress induced by hyperosmotic conditions12
  • Animal studies also indicate that blueberries can reduce retinal cell damage and slow the progression of conditions like age-related macular degeneration and cataracts2

How can you include blueberries in your diet?

  •  For a tasty and healthy boost, you could add blueberries to muesli, yoghurt, or smoothie bowl. 
  •  Blueberries are a terrific snack on their own, but you can also combine them with nuts and seeds to make your trail mix
  • Add blueberries to leafy greens, nuts of your choice, and a mild vinaigrette dressing to make a savoury and refreshing blend
  • You can also mix blueberries in baking recipes such as muffins, pancakes, or quick breads for a delicious treat
  • For a tasty and nutritious twist, cut up some fresh blueberries and sprinkle them over your preferred ice cream, yoghurt parfait, or custard1,16

Choosing the right type of blueberries

  • You can choose either fresh, frozen, or dried blueberries based on your likes and how you plan to use them
  • Fresh blueberries can provide a pop of flavour and texture to salads and snacks
  • Frozen blueberries are an excellent choice for smoothies and baking. Moreover, they retain their nutritious content well
  • Dried blueberries are useful for flavouring muesli or trail mixes. However, they might contain added sugars. so if you're managing your sugar consumption, be sure to read them

Pairing blueberries with other foods that enhance eye health

 For even better support for eye health, you can also combine blueberries with meals high in antioxidants and vitamins. You can try combining blueberries with leafy greens like spinach or kale, which are high in lutein and zeaxanthin. You can also combine them with nuts and seeds which contain omega-3 fatty acids that support eye function. 

Potential side effects or considerations

Blueberries wouldn't cause any allergic reaction to most of the people. However, some people are less sensitive to the salicylates included in blueberries which can result in allergic reactions. If you're not sure if you have any allergies, it's best that you introduce blueberries gradually to your diet.17

Are there any side effects of eating too many blueberries?

Overeating blueberries can cause short-term side effects including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Furthermore, especially for those using anticoagulants, the high vitamin K content of blueberries may increase the risk of blood clots. Furthermore, the natural sugars in blueberries could lower blood sugar levels, which might pose risks for individuals taking diabetes medications. Additionally, blueberries are known to stain teeth due to their intense pigmentation similar to coffee and tea.17

Who should not eat blueberries?

If you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency you should consult a doctor before consuming blueberries to prevent health issues. Moreover, if you have undergone surgery you should also be cautious since blueberries can affect blood sugar levels.18
