The new-era masses are quite concerned with their health and are aware of the significance of fitness. Thus effective weight management practices are gaining popularity among everyone. The dragon fruit is getting considerable attention for assisting in weight loss, various nutritional features, and repression of illnesses related to inflammatory reactions.

The dragon fruit plant (Hydrocereus spp.) flourishing cactus plant. Some varieties are epiphytic, meaning that they grow off the surfaces of other plants, whilst others are xerophytic, meaning that they can grow in dry, barren environments such as deserts. The dragon fruit has an attractive appearance and delicious taste. The fruit has bright re skin with green scales, and it contains red or white flesh with many black seeds.

The fruit was introduced in Mexico and Central and South America (Britton and Rose, 1963; Morton, 1987, and Mizrahi et al., 1997). It is also known as “Noble Woman”, or “ Queen of the Night” because of its lovely night-blooming flower and being a long-day plant. It has many different names, like “Strawberry Pear”, “Belle of the Night”, and “Jesus in the Cradle”.

Nutritional profile of dragon fruit

The nutritional benefits of dragon fruit are determined based on the species, garnering time, and environmental conditions (Liaotrakoon, 2013; Nurul and Asmah, 2014 respectively). The fruit is laden with important minerals namely phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, and sodium. It also contains glucose, fructose, dietary fiber, vitamins (Rao and Sasanka, 2015), and antioxidants (Morton, 1987).

The nutritional composition of a 100g portion of edible dragon fruit is summarised in Table 1.

The seeds of dragon fruits contain 50% of essential fatty acids like linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Dragon fruit holds worldwide recognition for having notable amounts of polyphenolic elements and for its antioxidant and antimicrobial attributes. Due to its high water content, the fruit provides a feeling of fullness - this regulates the appetite and helps in weight management.

Metabolism-boosting features

A study depicts that dragon fruit oligosaccharides display prebiotic requisites that harmonize the gut microbiota (bifidobacterium spp. and faecalibacterium were increased, whereas decreased E. coli) in the human colon system. The effective dose for healthy adults was determined to be 4g/day for enhancing the IgA level and 8g/day for a healthy gut microbiota.

Prebiotic features and improvement of gut health favor better metabolism. Moreover, dragon fruit is high in fiber aids in bowel movements, and avoids complications like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Blood glucose level regulation

The modern lifestyle encourages junk food loaded with fats and scarcity of physical movements, giving rise to diseases such as hypercholesterolemia related to cardiac diseases- further leading to atherosclerosis, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and organ-function defects. Studies have shown that constant workouts, medications, and consuming fiber and antioxidant-rich fruits like dragon fruit reduce blood glucose levels.

Red dragon fruit peel incorporates flavonoids catechins, betacyanin, ascorbic acid, and soluble and insoluble fiber that enhances lipid profile. The antioxidant trait of red dragon fruit peel has been proven to decrease triglyceride levels in dyslipidemic rats in a recent study.

Digestive health and detoxification

Dragon fruit constitutes minerals and nutrients such as Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin C, carbohydrate, fiber, fat, protein thiamin, niacin, arginine, isoleucine, cobalamin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), iron, catechins, quercetin derivatives, inositol, betacyanins, Phosphorous, and some other significant components that encourage enhanced and effective gastrointestinal-mechanism. It also hinders colorectal cancer and diabetes.

Moreover, it eliminates the secretion of heavy metals and manages cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Dragon fruit is also believed to exhibit hepatoprotective properties by regulating lipid metabolism and reducing TG contents, thus hampering the liver enzymes AST and ALT.

Satiety and reduced cravings

Red dragon fruit peel incorporates approximately 3.31% dietary fiber, primarily composed of cellulose and pectin. Cellulose, an insoluble fiber, provides a sense of satiety, leading to reduced calorie intake and supporting weight loss efforts. Pectin, a soluble fiber, can retain water in the digestive tract, prolonging the digestion process in the stomach and promoting prolonged feelings of fullness. This helps in preventing overconsumption of food.

A high-fiber diet plays a significant role in glycemic control, particularly in regulating carbohydrate metabolism. Soluble fiber, for example, forms a gel-like substance in the stomach, which slows down gastric emptying and nutrient absorption, including glucose.

Role in exercise and fitness regimen

Regular exercise and dragon fruit consumption together can contribute significantly to one’s fitness journey in many ways. Dragon fruit contains antioxidants, phenolic content, flavonoids betalain, and ascorbic acid that help in atherosclerosis, hypertension, and inflammation- directly impacting blood vessels.

Betalains aid in resisting oxidative stress, thus lowering the LDL cholesterol in the blood, boosting the immune system, and enhancing digestion- leading to weight loss. Phosphorous and Calcium promote tissue development and strengthen the bones. Dragon fruit produces healthy flora like Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, which assist in digestion and retain a healthy immune system.

Bioactive compounds namely hydroxyproline, DNA collagen content, and proteins present in dragon fruit raise the tensile strength by promoting wound healing and are also utilized in treating injuries. The fiber content in dragon fruit is capable of reducing the number of fat cells in the body.

Side-effects of dragon fruit

Dragon fruit is considered safe to eat, however some individuals may develop allergic reactions such as hives, tongue swelling, and vomiting. But once the dragon fruit is digested, the momentary reactions should subside. It is worth speaking to your doctor if you experience ongoing issues, and to seek urgent medical attention if you experience any breathing difficulties.
