- Lifestyle effects on blood pressure (well-established)
- Exercise and pain management for musculoskeletal conditions
- Dietary interventions for inflammatory bowel disease
- Cost-effectiveness of prevention
Limited evidence exists for:
- Functional medicine is a complete integrated system (most evidence is for individual interventions like diet, exercise, stress management; not the full programme)
- Specific treatments for 'leaky gut' causing autoimmune disease (dysbiosis is documented; causation is still being clarified)
- Long-term outcomes beyond 2-3 years
- Predicting who will respond to which interventions36
Most functional medicine evidence comes from studies of individual lifestyle interventions (proven beneficial across dozens of studies) rather than from complete functional medicine programmes delivered by practitioners. This is an important distinction.
When Root Cause Medicine Makes Sense for You
