Brittle nails and fragile hair might seem like minor cosmetic annoyances, but they're often your body's way of sending a message. 1 in 5 people struggle with brittle nails, and the rate is significantly higher among women over 50.1 Hair breakage and loss affect even more people, with over half of postmenopausal women experiencing noticeable hair thinning.2,3
The good news? These conditions are usually fixable, but improvement takes time and consistency. Nails grow approximately 3-4 millimetres per month, and hair grows about 6 inches per year.4,5 This slow growth rate explains why even proven treatments need 3-6 months to show visible results. Understanding what actually causes brittle nails and hair, and which treatments have real clinical evidence, is the difference between wasting money on supplements and seeing genuine improvement.

Why Nails and Hair Become Brittle: The Real Causes
Both your nails and hair are 95% protein, specifically a tough, resilient protein called keratin.4,6 When you don't have enough of the right nutrients, your body can't maintain the structural integrity of these tissues. This is why brittle nails and fragile hair often appear together.
The most common causes fall into three categories: nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions, and environmental damage.
Nutritional Deficiencies: The Foundation Problem
Protein is non-negotiable. Without adequate protein intake, your body literally cannot build strong nails and hair.7,8 This is the foundational nutrient; no amount of supplements can compensate for low protein intake. Studies show that people with insufficient protein develop visibly thin, weak, easily breakable hair and brittle nails.9
Iron deficiency is particularly important because it creates a specific, recognisable pattern. Iron-deficient individuals develop spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia) with a concave, thin, brittle appearance.10 More importantly, iron deficiency correlates with recent hair loss.8 The reason is straightforward: iron carries oxygen to your hair follicles, and without it, the follicles weaken.8,11 Research shows that iron supplementation within 6 months of the onset of hair loss yields better outcomes than waiting longer.12
Vitamin D deficiency is especially important in hair loss.8 A 2014 study showed that 91% of people with alopecia areata (an autoimmune form of hair loss) have low vitamin D levels, compared with only 33% of healthy controls.13 This dramatic difference suggests that vitamin D screening is worthwhile if you're losing hair, particularly in patchy patterns.
Biotin gets a lot of marketing attention, but the reality is more nuanced. A landmark Swiss study found a 91% improvement in nail firmness with 2.5 mg of biotin daily over 5.5 months, while a more conservative retrospective study found a 63% improvement.14 The critical point: biotin works best when you actually have a biotin deficiency, and true deficiency is rare in developed countries.8 Taking biotin supplements without evidence of deficiency shows minimal benefit.8 Some dermatologists recommend against it due to weak evidence in healthy individuals.
Zinc deficiency causes distinctive horizontal lines across nails called Beau's lines, which serve as a visual marker that zinc is the problem.15 Like biotin, zinc supplementation only helps if you're deficient, and testing before supplementing is essential because excess zinc is harmful.
B vitamins, vitamin C, selenium, and copper all play supporting roles in healthy nail and hair growth.8,16 The takeaway: micronutrient deficiencies often co-occur, which is why getting blood work done before supplementing is so important.
Medical Conditions That Look Like Simple Brittleness
Thyroid disease is one of the most frequent causes of brittle nails and hair loss.17 Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) causes dry, coarse, brittle, slow-growing hair and fragile nails because thyroid hormones directly regulate hair follicle activity. This often appears alongside other symptoms: fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and dry skin.18 The encouraging part: proper thyroid hormone replacement improves nails and hair within months.18
Alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition affecting roughly 1 in 1,000 people with a female predominance, causes patchy hair loss and may include distinctive nail pitting or ridges.19 Unlike pattern baldness (which is genetic and gradual), alopecia areata can develop suddenly and sometimes regresses spontaneously.19 Women are 2.3 times more likely to develop it than men.20
Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) is the most common form of hair loss, affecting up to 80% of men by age 80 and 50% of postmenopausal women.21 It's genetic, involves the hormone DHT, and shows a clear age progression.21 Unlike some other causes, pattern baldness doesn't just make hair brittle; it causes hair follicles to shrink, producing thinner, shorter hairs.21
Telogen effluvium is different because it's temporary. A physical or emotional stressor (surgery, childbirth, extreme weight loss, major illness, or COVID-19) triggers a wave of hair follicles to enter the shedding phase simultaneously. Hair loss usually starts 2-3 months after the trigger and stops within 3–6 months once the trigger resolves. This condition is more common than many realise and usually resolves on its own.22
Environmental Damage: What You Can Control
Water exposure is surprisingly damaging. Research shows that just 21 days of repeated wetting and drying cycles can induce brittleness in normal nails.23 This explains why people who work with water constantly (healthcare workers, dishwashers, swimmers) so often complain of brittle nails. The fix is simple: wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when your hands will be in water for extended periods.
Heat damage to hair has a clear threshold. Below 140°C (284°F), hair damage is reversible and linked to water loss. Above 140°C, damage is permanent and structural.24 This matters because low-heat styling with a heat-protectant product will recover once the heat stress ends, whereas high-heat damage is irreversible. Air-drying or blow-drying on low heat with a heat protectant causes far less permanent damage than high-heat straightening or curling.
Chemical exposure from hair treatments (dyes, relaxers, bleach), harsh shampoos, and acetone-based nail polish remover gradually damages keratin structure.25,26,27 Hair damaged by chemical relaxers shows significant loss of cysteine (a critical amino acid), suggesting the chemicals directly disrupt protein bonds.27
What Actually Works: Evidence-Based Solutions
The research is clear: some treatments have strong evidence, others show mixed results, and some have virtually none. Here's what the clinical trials actually show.
Strong Evidence: Proven to Work
Correcting documented nutritional deficiencies is genuinely effective. If blood tests show you're deficient in iron, biotin, zinc, or vitamin D, supplementing that specific nutrient produces measurable improvement. This requires testing first, not guessing.
Collagen peptides show solid clinical evidence. A 24-week study of people taking 2.5 g daily found:7
- 42% reduction in broken nails
- 12% increase in nail growth rate
- 64% global clinical improvement
- 88% improvement at just 4 weeks post-treatment
Unlike some supplements, collagen peptides don't require a documented deficiency to work. They appear to provide building blocks for nail repair regardless of your baseline nutritional status.
Tazarotene (prescription) is the strongest option if you're not responding to supplements or lifestyle changes. A 2011 clinical trial found:30
- 89.5% overall improvement
- 73.7% showing visible improvement by week 12
- Only 5.3% reporting mild side effects
Applied twice daily for 24 weeks, tazarotene stimulates cell turnover and nail plate remodelling.31 It's a prescription-only treatment worth discussing with your GP if other approaches haven't worked after 3-6 months.
Nail care practices prevent further damage and improve brittleness within 3-6 months. Daily moisturising after water exposure, wearing gloves, and using an acetone-free nail polish remover address the environmental factors that drive brittleness.23,26 The research shows that moisturiser frequency matters more than the product's water content.32
Hair care practices reduce breakage and fragility. Using wide-toothed combs on wet hair, using conditioner every wash, minimising heat, and allowing hair to air-dry can improve hair health over 6-12 months.

Moderate Evidence: Works for Many People
Biotin supplementation shows 63-91% improvement in clinical trials, but only when you have a documented deficiency or brittle nail syndrome.14 Without testing, the evidence is weaker. If you decide to try it (discuss with your doctor first), expect to wait months for results. Nail thickness increased by 25% in the Swiss study, a measurable change.14
Iron supplementation works if you're deficient, but universal screening isn't recommended. Test first. If your ferritin is below 10-20 ng/mL, supplementation shows real benefits, especially within 6 months of hair loss onset.12,16
Zinc supplementation at 20-30 mg daily for prolonged periods can help with deficiency-related nail fragility, but again, testing is essential because excess zinc is harmful.16
Combination micronutrient supplements that include amino acids, vitamins, and minerals have shown effectiveness in clinical trials, suggesting that multiple nutritional gaps often coexist. A study of a biomineral formulation containing amino acids, vitamins C and E, biotin, B6, and minerals showed effective nail strengthening after just 3 months with no significant side effects.33

Weak or No Evidence: Don't Rely on These
Taking biotin, iron, or zinc without a documented deficiency shows minimal benefit. Many over-the-counter "hair and nail" supplements lack specific, evidence-based ingredients. Marketing claims about quick transformations don't match clinical reality.
Realistic Timelines: Why Waiting Is Part of the Process
Understanding why improvement takes time helps you stay motivated. Fingernails grow approximately 3-4 mm per month, meaning a complete nail replacement takes 4-6 months.4 Hair grows about 6 inches (15 cm) per year, roughly half an inch per month.5 Because treatments work by improving the quality of newly growing nail and hair, you're waiting for the damaged portions to grow out and be replaced by healthier tissue.
This is also why combining approaches often works better than single interventions. Daily moisturising prevents further water damage while a supplement addresses nutritional deficiency. Gentle hair care prevents additional breakage while biotin supports new growth.

Your Practical Action Plan
Week 1-2: Get Evaluated
See your GP. Request blood work for iron (ferritin and serum iron), biotin levels (if possible; not all GPs offer this), vitamin D, B vitamins, and thyroid function if you have brittle nails and hair loss together. Medical evaluation can rule out thyroid disease, alopecia areata, fungal infections, or other conditions that require specific treatment.
Week 1-4: Start Dietary Improvements
Increase protein intake at every meal. Eggs, fish, lean meat, yoghurt, beans, and nuts are excellent sources of protein. Eat iron-rich foods: red meat, poultry, beans, spinach, and lentils. Vitamin C with meals enhances iron absorption. This is highly accessible to most and is the foundation on which all other treatments rest.
Week 2-4: Decide on Supplements
Based on blood work, discuss supplementation with your GP. If testing shows a deficiency, supplementing is evidence-based and worthwhile. If no deficiency is found, but you want to try supplements anyway:7,14
- Collagen peptides, 2.5 g daily, are safe and have good clinical evidence
- Biotin 2.5 mg daily is generally safe (but discuss first)
- A combination micronutrient supplement may be more effective than single nutrients
Week 1 onwards: Optimise Daily Habits
For nails: Wear rubber gloves when washing dishes or cleaning. Moisturise nails and cuticles daily, especially after exposure to water.32 Trim with sharp tools. Use acetone-free nail polish remover.26 Leave cuticles alone.
For hair: Condition after every wash. Use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair. Minimise heat (air-dry when possible; if you must blow-dry, use low heat and a heat protectant). Reduce manipulation and pulling. Consider coconut oil for the ends.34
Month 2-6: Monitor Progress
Take photos of your nails. Rate brittleness on a scale of 1-10. Don't expect overnight changes, but by month 3-4, you should notice something if your intervention is working. Improvement might be subtle: slightly firmer nails, less breaking when you comb, and reduced shedding in the shower.
Month 3+: Escalate If Needed
If you see no improvement after 3 months of consistent effort, discuss prescription tazarotene with your doctor. Some people see faster, more dramatic results with a medical-grade treatment.
Red Flags: When to See a Doctor Immediately
Brittle nails and fragile hair are often just cosmetic problems. But sometimes they signal something more serious.
For nails, see your GP if you notice:10,35,36,37
- Sudden onset of severe brittleness (not gradual)
- Spoon-shaped nails (concave, thin appearance), suggesting iron deficiency
- Terry's nails (mostly white except for a narrow pink band at the top), which can indicate liver, heart, or kidney problems
- Nail pitting (small dents), which sometimes accompanies alopecia areata
- Yellow discolouration, which can indicate lung disease
- Nail clubbing (nails curving over rounded fingertips), suggesting low oxygen, lung disease, or heart problems
- Blue discolouration or unusual colours
- Separation of the nail from the nail bed
- Pain, swelling, discharge, or signs of infection
For hair loss, see a dermatologist if you experience:8,19,38
- Sudden, significant hair loss (not gradual thinning)
- Patchy hair loss (suggests alopecia areata, not pattern baldness)
- Hair loss alongside other symptoms: fatigue, pale skin, weakness (suggests anaemia), or cold intolerance, weight gain, dry skin (suggests thyroid disease)
- Scalp pain or inflammation
- Hair loss that's rapidly worsening
The general principle: anything that appears suddenly or changes significantly warrants medical attention. Early intervention improves outcomes for most conditions.
Distinguishing Between Different Types of Hair Loss
Understanding what's causing your hair loss helps you choose the right treatment.
Androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) develops gradually over months and years. It's genetic, affects both men and women, and shows a clear age progression (very rare in people in their 20s, increasingly common with each decade). The hairline recedes, or the part widens. Hair becomes thinner and shorter. This doesn't improve with nutritional supplements alone; it requires targeted medical treatment, such as minoxidil or finasteride.21
Alopecia areata appears suddenly in patches. You might notice a smooth bald patch without scaling or scarring. Hair at the edges of the patch might be short and broken-looking. It's autoimmune, not genetic, and affects both men and women equally (though slightly more women). Vitamin D supplementation is worthwhile; other treatments include topical corticosteroids.13,19
Telogen effluvium starts 2-3 months after a stressful event. You notice excessive shedding in the shower, when brushing, or on your pillow. Hair falls out all over the scalp, not in patches. Most people recover without treatment once the triggering stress resolves. Nutritional support and stress management help.22
Nutritional deficiency-related loss is diffuse, develops over months, and improves with supplementation once the deficiency is corrected. It usually appears alongside other signs: fatigue, pale skin, weakness (iron deficiency), or cold intolerance and weight gain (thyroid disease).8
The Bottom Line
Brittle nails and fragile hair are fixable, but the process requires patience, consistency, and realistic expectations.
Start with blood work to rule out deficiencies and medical conditions. Increase protein intake and optimise nutrition. Implement daily care habits to prevent further damage (moisturising, wearing gloves when doing nails, conditioning, and gentle handling of hair). If blood work shows a deficiency, supplement that specific nutrient. If no deficiency is found, but you want to try a supplement with evidence, collagen peptides are a reasonable choice.

By month 6, if you've addressed nutritional gaps and implemented daily care changes, you should notice firmer nails, less breakage, and healthier-looking hair. The encouraging part: modern treatments like collagen peptides and tazarotene have genuine clinical evidence. You're not relying on marketing hype or hope. These treatments have been studied, measured, and shown to work for many people. Your brittle nails and fragile hair are not a permanent condition; they're a sign that something needs adjustment, whether that's nutrition, daily habits, or medical treatment.
